Brandon Watson Continues Winning Ways at Sunset Speedway

After being crowned the Fast Eddie Super Late Model Champion last year at Sunset Speedway, Brandon Watson carried his winning ways into 2017 as he won the Spring Velocity 75-lapper.

He started off the night fast, timing in quickest with a lap of 13.708 seconds ahead of his uncle Glenn Watson (13.807) and Kelly Balson (13.868).

With the invert in place, it’d be Dustin Jackson starting pole ahead of Sean Grosman, John Cadman, Derrick Tiemersma, Kelly Balson, Glenn Watson, Brandon Watson, Brad Corcoran and Paul Howse.

Off the drop of the green flag, Jackson led the opening lap with Cadman quickly moving into second. Cadman then got alongside Jackson for the lead, passing him on Lap 3 and bringing Balson and Brandon Watson both through. Balson then continued his climb forward, passing Cadman for first on Lap 5, and bringing Watson through with him.

Cadman now ran third, as Grosman and Jackson ran side-by-side for fourth. Grosman got the spot on Lap 7, bringing Glenn Watson through with him. Watson then got alongside Grosman for fourth at Lap 8, completing the pass two laps later. Grosman now ran fifth ahead of Tiemersma, Jackson, Howse and Corcoran. Tiemersma then got alongside Grosman for fifth at Lap 11, completing the pass a lap later and bringing Jackson through with him.

Further up the field, Glenn Watson was able to get alongside Cadman for third at Lap 13, completing the pass a lap later with Tiemersma rounding out the top-five. Jackson continued to run sixth ahead of Grosman, Howse and Corcoran.

At the front, the battle for the lead heated up on Lap 18 with Brandon Watson getting alongside Balson. Watson would complete the pass a lap later, bumping Balson back to second ahead of Glenn Watson, Tiemersma, and Cadman. Jackson continued to run sixth ahead of Grosman, Howse and Corcoran. Glenn continued his climb forward, getting alongside Balson for second at Lap 26, completing the pass two laps later. The field ran for the most part single-file till Lap 45, when the caution flew for debris in turn four.

Brandon Watson got a good restart, holding off his uncle Glenn Watson and leading the rest of the way en route to scoring the victory. Derrick Tiemersma got by Kelly Balson on the restart to finish third in the 75-lap feature, with Dustin Jackson rounding out the top-five. John Cadman finished seventh ahead of Jordan Howse, Brad Corcoran and Sean Grosman.
