INNISFIL, Ontario — Not originally scheduled to be behind the wheel this weekend, Jessica James did so after comments from her peers in wanting to help get more cars on the track. Despite no practice, though, she was her usual fast self in scoring the feature victory for the Outlaw Midgets presented by Canadian Tire Innisfil at Sunset Speedway on Saturday night.
Jody Bound won the first heat ahead of Jamie Kay, Wally Wilson, Larry Lawson, Rob Harrison, Adam Tyo, Zach Millman, and Dan Kviring.
Mike Bradley was victorious in the second qualifier in front of Dave Bradley, Kevin Spiez, and Wayne McKibbon. Richard Woodland and Jessica James both failed to finish with mechanical issues.
Jody Bound went for the daily double ahead of Lawson, Kay, Wilson, Tyo, Harrison, Millman, and Kviring.
Jessica James was victorious in the fourth qualifier in front of Woodland, Dave Bradley, Mike Bradley, McKibbon, Spiez, and McNeil.
Come feature time, Jay Kay started on pole ahead of Jody Bound, Mike Bradley, Dave Bradley, Larry Lawson, Wally Wilson, Jessica James, Richard Woodland, Wayne McKibbon, Kevin Spiez, Adam Tyo, Rob Harrison, Zach Millman, Dan Kviring, and Shawn McNeil.
Jody Bound broke out to the early advantage with Kay in second ahead of Mike Bradley and Lawson. Mike Bradley would then get around Kay for second on Lap 3, with McNeil slowing with a problem a lap later. Lawson moved into third on Lap 5 ahead of James, Dave Bradley, Kay, and Woodland, with Kviring pulling into the infield done for the night a lap later.
The traffic would get interesting as the race went on, becoming a problem on Lap 10 when third-place runner Lawson and lapped car McNeil came together on the backstretch. Thankfully, both drivers were uninjured. With 15 laps to go, Bound led Mike Bradley, James, Dave Bradley, Kay, Woodland, McKibbon, Wilson, Spiez, Harrison, and Tyo.
James snagged the top spot on the restart ahead of Bound, with the Bradley’s occupying the next two spots as Mike ran in front of Dave. Woodland moved into fifth ahead of Kay, with Wilson alongside Spiez for seventh. However, the caution was back out on Lap 12 for debris.
James got another good restart ahead of Bound and Bradley, but Bound wasn’t ready to back down. He would challenge James for the top spot on Lap 16, getting it – just for the yellow flag to wave once again.
James did not back down, either, with a good restart to follow the previous three to keep herself ahead of Bound, as Mike Bradley got loose, allowing both Dave Bradley and Woodland by on Lap 18 as they battled now for third. McKibbon ran sixth, with Wilson and Spiez side-by-side for seventh. Wilson got the spot on Lap 20, with Bound challenging for the lead once again.
James continued to fend off his challenges, with Wilson getting alongside McKibbon for fifth as they came towards the checkered flag.
Jessica James won the feature ahead of Jody Bound, Dave Bradley, Richard Woodland, and Wayne McKibbon. Wally Wilson placed sixth, followed by Mike Bradley, Adam Tyo, Rob Harrison, and Kevin Spiez. Jamie Kay, Larry Lawson, Shawn McNeil, Zach Millman, and Dan Kviring failed to finish.
