After watching the Pro Late Models and Canadian Vintage Modifieds get their turn at returning to the track, the next set of divisions are ready to go with the Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, Pure Stocks scheduled for Operation Green Flag on July 4 at Flamboro Speedway. One of the drivers scheduled to be part of the field is Gerrit Tiemersma.
“I’m just happy to finally be racing,” he told SHORT TRACK MUSINGS. “It’s been way too long. Flamboro has been a successful track for our team and I’m happy to have the first race of the year there to represent my primary sponsor Wayfreight in their home track.”
Tiemersma has been successful at Flamboro in the past, scoring a third-place overall finish at Frostoberfest in October against some of the best in the province. It is looking like the field will be just as strong, if not better, when the series returns with a full field pre-registered already.
“Regarding the competition, I’m happy to see such a good list of drivers that are going to show up this July,” he commented. “It should make for some great racing, and I’m up to the challenge.”
Outside of the year-end special, Tiemersma put together a solid campaign with a win at Flamboro on August 17, along with seven top-five’s and 12 top-10’s in Sunset Speedway weekly competition. He then put the icing on the cake, scoring the victory in the year-end Fall Velocity special.
“One word can describe last year’s momentum – relief,” he shared. “Sunset has been our home track for 5 years and it has also been our worst track. Winning the Velocity 250 was a sigh of relief to us that we may have finally got ‘the monkey off of our backs.’ Frostoberfest brought more success with a podium finish and we’re excited to keep the momentum going.”
Even though he has not been at the track behind the wheel of his familiar Wayfreight ride, the young man has been busy through the quarantine, working full-time roofing while ensuring the car was ready to go.
“I also graduated from Durham College in April for Small Business, so fortunately I have been able to avoid being stuck at home,” he added. “Our livery reveal will happen in the next couple of weeks so stay tuned for that.”
