The wins keep on coming for Spencer-Walt Motorsports as they picked up their sixth feature victory of 2017 on Saturday night at Sunset Speedway.
Starting fourth in the feature, he ran up front through the early stages, keeping himself in contention as the leaders battled ahead of him. On Lap 10, the pair of leaders tangled, with one of them going around, resulting in both drivers being sent to the back and Spencer-Walt moving up to the runner-up position. Restarting second with 26 laps to go, he would pass Nick Goetz on the restart for the top spot. From there on, he was able to hold off Goetz and the rest of the field en route to scoring the victory.
Starting 12th in the second feature on the night, he began to make up ground immediately, moving up to ninth by the fifth lap. He continued to move forward, eventually running eighth by Lap 11. The progress continued, as he put himself up into the sixth position by the halfway mark of the feature. He would then sneak by Danny Benedict with nine laps to go to move into the top-five, followed by getting alongside Paul Maltese for fourth a lap later. He would clear him for the spot soon thereafter, moving into fourth. He would attempt to run down the top-three, but was unable to by the checkered flag, crossing the finish line in the fourth position.
The top-fives continue to add to this season’s results, though, marking nine podium finishes in 17 features this season. Ultimately, the finishes almost didn’t come together as a result of a series of struggles through practice.
“Well not many of the fans know, but the motor was in pieces last week – the track did what they have to do and they tech’ed the top-three,” Spencer-Walt said in victory lane. “We’re glad they did as we found a couple of things. But we had to change a bushing in the back of the motor and I just put everything back together the way it should have been, and it just didn’t work. So my cousin Justin and I went to work. We have a skeleton crew but we showed up here and pulled it apart four or five times, changing shims and stuff, and everything that we could change in this car.
“I told the guys to pack it in and let’s load it in the trailer as I was fed up and too hot and look at where we’re sitting. So hard work pays off.”
On top of thanking his own team, Spencer-Walt gave a shout-out to Maltese Motorsports for their help, as well.
“First off, I have to thank Maltese’s team, too and Jamie (Sutton) on their team. He came over and gave us a big hand with the clutch, and helping us out with us having a small crew,” he said. “They’re always offering help. Paul and his team are great people, too, so I have to thank them and my whole team. It’s hot out here and they worked their asses off.”
