With each season that comes up in the Ontario short tracks, there is always a list of drivers that everyone is keeping an eye on with each other division, wondering how they’re going to perform. The Super Stocks are no different, as evident by the success and strength of the Qwick Wick Super Stock Series since launched.
There are a bunch of drivers who are capable of winning, but here are some drivers that are on the radar of people across the province.
As always, be sure to comment with your thoughts – whether positive or negative, and enjoy getting to know these competitors a little more.
14. Ryan Dyson
2022 Ranking: 20th
2023 Thoughts: Entering 2023 I can’t help but feel like racing is in a great position and on an upswing. 2022 saw big crowds, big fields of cars and an awesome product displayed at every track. For 2023, our race team is working with Rick Verberne, crew chief for DJ Kennington in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series. Our team has done an incredible job of learning and building since we started in 2018 but working with Rick and harnessing the knowledge he has to offer is what we need to take the next step.
2023 Plans: Full-time in the Qwick Wick Super Stock Series and full-time in the Delaware Speedway weekly Super Stock Series. We might throw a surprise or two in there as well!
2023 Goals: Go win a championship. In past seasons we have always set what we feel was an attainable goal, for example in 2022 it was to win a feature race and be in the championship conversation, and we did just that. With the evolution of our program and direction we are going, we now feel like all the pieces have been put together and we have the experience to go hunt down a championship; more wins will also come with that.
Drivers to Watch: The talent pool in the Super Stock division goes far beyond five drivers, whether that be on tour or weekly at Delaware. In the Qwick Wick Super Stock Series a lot of people will have an eye on Pete Vanderwyst, Lane Zardo, and Gerrit Tiemersma and in weekly Delaware competition it will be the usual heavy hitters like Jay Doerr and Trevor Collver, but I also think guys like Carson Nagy and Rick Verberne can’t be slept on and will make an impact on the season. I could rifle off ten or twelve cars at least in both series and say keep an eye on them, that is a testament to this division’s depth of quality teams, drivers and equipment.
Since entering the conversation of Super Stock competition, we have seen Ryan Dyson make steady improvements with each passing year. The same could be said for 2022 as he placed fifth in the Qwick Wick Super Stock Series standings with a pair of top-five’s. He also ran the full Delaware Speedway schedule, placing eighth in points with four top-five’s and seven top-10’s including a victory in nine races.
13. Johnny Morrison
2022 Ranking: 25th
2023 Thoughts: With how last year went we learned a lot about the car and what makes it tick. Brian MacDonald did a awesome job with the car over the winter and Danny Benedict worked with me all season to tweak on it and try different things. So grateful for them and what they’ve done for me. With all that it helps me enter the season with more confidence. Got some changes up our sleeve that we hope will pay off even more. So super excited to race but also making sure I take care of building a better life outside the track, racing can set you back if your not careful.
2023 Plans: Race the season at Sunset and possibly the Qwick Wick race there as well. Would love to travel and do the full Qwick Wick series but it’s not financially an option.
2023 Goals: Win races. I chased a championship last year and it was quite draining. Realized we were in the hunt half way through and really put everything in my program to get it done. Unfortunately we needed one more point but at the end of the day I’m very grateful I still get to strap in and have some fun!
Drivers to Watch: Cole Burrows will be a good young talent, can’t wait to help him at the track and get him going. Brandon Mcferran will be fast with the brand new chassis this year – kid can wheel. Rick Spencer-Walt will be fun to watch; the guy is fast in everything he gets in, so it’ll be fun to lean on him throughout the year and have some fun racing. Cory McAllister will be good as well; huge improvements with his program and was tough to race. Also appreciate everything he’s doing for the racing community with Two Speed Motorsports. Gerrit Tiemersma will be fast per usual – winning the championship at sunset and finishing second in Qwick Wick speaks for itself.
Throughout the 2022 season, Johnny Morrison proved a lot at Sunset Speedway as evident by being one of the three in the thick of the championship battle that came down to a matter of a couple points on the final night. He may have come up short in his bid, but he scored eight top-five’s including a victory, capped off with an average finish of 3.11 on the season.
12. Brandon McFerran
2022 Ranking: 17th
2023 Thoughts: I think we are in for a pretty good 2023 season. We are fresh off A huge victory at Flamboro so that has really sparked a flame in everyone on our team. Also coming out with a brand new Streamline chassis is gonging to be huge, Shaun McWhirter builds awesome race cars and has these Super stocks figured out.
2023 Plans: As of right now we plan on running at Sunset Speedway under the NASCAR banner and also run the Qwick Wick series and see what we can do with the best of the best.
2023 Goals: Obviously getting back into victory lane a bunch more times, and ultimately have as much fun as possible while doing so. We built a new trophy shelf at the new Streamline shop for that igloo but it’s pretty lonely up there, so hopefully we can fill it up! But in all seriousness, just being consistent and bring the car home in one piece every weekend is the first goal.
Drivers to Watch: Lane Zardo, Miles Tyson, Gerrit Tiemersma, Ethan Constable (hopefully he’s coming back this year), Cory McAllister
Brandon McFerran capped off the year on a high, as mentioned with the victory at Flamboro Speedway in the 2022 edition of Frostoberfest. Knowing the event brings out the best in the division, it has to bode well when looking into the crystal ball for the year ahead. He also scored a pair of top-five’s in three Qwick Wick tour starts, as well as two top-fives with no finishes worse than ninth at Sunset Speedway.
