J.R. Fitzpatrick Victorious in Electric City 167 at Peterborough Speedway

PETERBOROUGH, Ontario — After winning the 2022 APC Auto Parts United Late Model Series of Ontario Championship and 2022 Grisdale Triple Crown, J.R. Fitzpatrick put the icing on the cake for the year by winning the Electric City 167 at Peterborough Speedway.

Off the drop of the green flag, J.R. Fitzpatrick grabbed the top spot in front of Dan McHattie, Ryan Kimball, Shawn Chenoweth, Gord Shepherd, Bobby Cousineau, Dwayne Baker, James Horner, Travis Hallyburton, Jacob Mercer, Billy Zardo, and Brandt Graham. The first caution then came out on Lap 5 for Chenoweth spinning Kimball.

Fitzpatrick got a good restart in front of McHattie, Shepherd, Baker, Horner, Hallyburton and Cousineau, as Mercer and Graham battled for eighth. Mercer got the spot on Lap 9, with Zardo running 10th. Horner continued to move forward, passing Baker for fourth on Lap 10, as Cousineau climbed the backstretch wall a lap later. Graham got by Mercer for eighth on Lap 12 ahead of Zardo, with Shawn McGlynn and Chenoweth side-by-side for 11th. Chenoweth got the spot two laps later, bringing Kimball and Tyler Junkin through with him.

With 18 laps on the board, Fitzpatrick led McHattie, Shepherd, Horner, Baker, Hallyburton, Cousineau, Graham, Mercer, Chenoweth, Kimball, Zardo, Junkin, and Gary Elliott. The second caution came out on Lap 24 for Norm Stoddard spinning McGlynn in turns three and four.

Fitzpatrick got a good restart in front of McHattie,  and Shepherd, with Baker back up to fourth in front of Hallyburton, Cousineau, Horner, Graham, and Chenoweth. The green flag did not last for long, with the third yellow flag on Lap 28 for Doug Wills spinning in turn four.

Fitzpatrick held serve in front of McHattie and Shepherd, with Hallyburton giving Shepherd a shot. Shepherd held onto third in front of Hallyburton, Horner, Chenoweth, Baker, Graham, Kimball, Connor James, Cousineau, Zardo, Mercer, McGlynn, Elliott, Steve Powell, Wills, and Junkin.

Chneoweth got back into the top-five with a pass on Horner on Lap 48, with Shepherd taking second from McHattie five laps later. Baker would get by Horner for sixth, just before the fourth caution for McHattie going around in turn four. The restart would not go smoothly, with Wills going around in turn two for the fifth yellow flag. The cautions continued, with a sixth on Lap 57 for McGlynn around in turns three and four.

Fitzpatrick got another good restart on Lap 63 in front of Shepherd, Hallyburton, Chenoweth, Baker, Kimball, James and Mercer, with Cousineau and Graham side-by-side for ninth. Kimball got alongside Baker for fifth on Lap 66, completing the pass a lap later. James ran seventh in front of Mercer, Cousineau, and McHattie. Kimball continued to move forward, passing Chenoweth for fourth on Lap 69, with McHattie back up to ninth in front of Graham, Cousineau, and Horner.

With 73 laps on the board, Fitzpatrick led Shpherd, Hallyburton, Kimball, Chenoweth, Baker, James, Mercer, and McHattie. McHattie’s hood flew open on Lap 75, but he was still able to get by Mercer for eighth, as Graham ran 10th in front of Cousineau, Horner, and Zardo. The seventh caution came out at Lap 76 so McHattie could address the hood.

Fitzpatrick held serve, with Hallyburton grabbing second in front of Kimball, Shepherd, Chenoweth, James, Baker, Graham, Cousineau, Mercer, Zardo, and Elliott. Horner got into Zardo on Lap 81, with McHattie moving into 12th in front of Horner and Elliott. McHattie tagged Zardo on Lap 84, passing him for 11th a lap later. Up front, Shepherd tagged Hallyburton for second on Lap 90, taking over the spot a lap later. The eighth caution came out on Lap 100 for fuel.

Fitzpatrick got a good restart in front of Shepherd, Hallyburton, Kimball, Chenoweth, James, Baker, Cousineau, McHattie, Graham, Mercer, Zardo, Horner and Powell, as Elliott and Junkin battled for 15th. McHattie continued to move back forward, passing Cousineau for eighth on Lap 106, with the ninth caution three laps later for Powell going around in turns three and four. Fitzpatrick held serve in front of Shepherd, with Hallyburton and Kimball side-by-side for third. Kimball took the spot, before the 10th yellow flag waved on Lap 111 for an incident in turn two.

Fitzpatrick got a good restart with Kimball moving into second in front of Chenoweth, Shepherd, Baker, and Hallyburton. McHattie got alongside Hallyburton for sixth on Lap 118, completing the pass a lap later, as Cousineau ran eighth in front of McGlynn, Graham, Zardo, Mercer, Elliott, and Junkin.

Shepherd did not stay back for long, retaking third on Lap 122 in front of Chenoweth, Baker, McHattie, Hallyburton, and Cousineau. James then challenged Cousineau for seventh on Lap 124, taking the spot three laps later. Cousineau ran eighth in front of Graham, Zardo, and Mercer, as the 11th caution came out on Lap 131 for Baker going around on the frontstretch grass.

Fitzpatrick held serve in front of Kimball, Shepherd, Hallyburton, James, and Cousineau, as Graham and Chenoweth battled for seventh in front of Zardo. Graham got the spot, with Baker moving into ninth on Lap 138, bringing McHattie through with him. Zardo now ran 11th in front of Mercer, Junkin, and Elliott. The shuffling continued with Graham taking sixth on Lap 146, bringing Chenoweth, Baker, and McHattie through with him. McHattie’s run ended, though, with a trip down pit road five laps later. Baker continued to regain ground, passing Chenoweth for seventh on Lap 155.

J.R. Fitzpatrick led the rest of the way en route to picking up the victory, with Ryan Kimball getting by Gord Shepherd on the last lap for second. Travis Hallyburton and Connor James rounded out the top-five.
