LONDON, Ontario — Making his third appearance at Delaware Speedway for their 70th Anniversary Shootout this past Friday, Rick Spencer-Walt was able to salvage a top-10 finish.
Spencer-Walt started off the night by showing speed in qualifying, laying down a lap of 18.295 seconds to place him second on the board, 0.084 off of the pole.
He carried the speed into the heat action later on that evening, pacing the field through the 15-lap qualifier for his first checkered flag at the half-mile.
The invert placed him just inside the top-10 for the start of the event, to which he faded back in the initial laps to 11th. As the race drew to the quarter-mark, he began to make his march forward, returning to the top-10 with 20 laps on the board. Despite fighting a clutch issue, a couple late-race restarts and well-timed moves allowed him to pick up a couple more spots to cross the finish line in eighth.
Spencer-Walt will hope to show the same speed when he returns to Delaware Speedway on Saturday, September 24 with the APC Auto Parts United Late Model Series. He currently ranks third in the points with five top-five’s and six top-10’s this year, 25 points out of the lead with a single race remaining.
