INNISFIL, Ontario — Putting the icing on the cake on Saturday night, Jake Spencer-Walt was crowned the 2022 Sunset Speedway Jr Late Model Champion.
The night did not start off smoothly, as an incident in practice sidelined the No. 31 entry. The Spencer-Walt Motorsports went to work on the car, and the dedication paid off as they were able to fix the damage.
Starting on pole, Spencer-Walt drove himself out to a sizable lead through the first half in front of the field. But battling a loose racecar off the corners, Spencer-Walt began to back down his speed, allowing his closest competitor to close the gap. Speaking about it afterwards, he said the decision came from a conversation with his father in knowing that championship night usually see “everything go wrong.”
A move would be made against him with a couple laps remaining, however the other driver would ultimately go around in turn four with two laps to go. A green-white-checkered restart would see the pair of youngsters battle once again for the top spot, with Spencer-Walt holding on for the victory.
The combination of gaining speed and experience each week, combined with regularly running up front and a couple checkered flags led Spencer-Walt to being crowned the track champion.
“It’s awesome,” he said afterwards. “Start of the year, we were pretty quick, and then the car fell apart. We’ve gotten back going (fast) now.”
It is worth noting despite traveling to three different tracks throughout the season, Spencer-Walt has now picked up nine top-five finishes in 2022.
