Sometimes when you stick a microphone in front of a driver’s face, you have no clue what they may say and a couple of times you’ll hear something that surprises you or gives you a bit of a perspective.
Throughout the 2021 season, I had the opportunity to speak to a bunch of different competitors. During those interviews, there were some quotes that stood out. So it seems only fitting we take a glance back through the year at what was said.
“For us, the outlaw midgets give us a reasonable price point to get into racing. Everyone we’ve met in the club has been gracious and helpful. Likely this is why so many people have stayed in this club for so many years.” – Carson Kay
“The cars themselves make this series one of the best in the province. Where else can you go as fast as a late model on a fraction of the cost? But, the people involved are awesome too. Some of our toughest competitors are also some of your best friends, who are always willing to help out.” – Dave Bradley
Jody Bound was spot on with his pre-season predictions in saying, “For 2021, there are several drivers to watch every night that have a shot a winning. One driver that is hungry for a championship with being a bridesmaid several times is Richard Woodland with Crew chief Tony Inkster turning the wrench. For Rookie of the year I would go with Carson Kay. From some Facebook posts he has been practicing on his dirt track and his newly acquired car looks sharp!”
“They are a family. Like most families we have our moments but over all we are a tight knit group. Our group doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Our cars run with no suspicion and only 1 1/2” off the ground. We run times that are only a few tenths off of LLM times. We can race 3-4 cars wide at times. It’s a load of fun.” – Kevin Spiez
“Outlaw Midgets are close knot bunch of racers – definitely the best racing experience for your dollar spent. On any night, any one of us would do just about anything for each other, but when we are on the track, it’s all business. Also, the traveling series aspect truly builds excitement and throws a different spin on things; some guys are better at different tracks. Most night after the race we share a couple beers.” – Mike Bradley
Richard Woodland kept his interview answers short and to the point, but spot on – “My goals are to win and get the championship.”
“The midgets are always so much fun because everyone is such good friends, and we all race hard! They’re really quick cars that can be easy to work on at times! One of my favourite cars I’ve ever raced!!” – Wally Wilson
What makes the Outlaw Midgets fun? Wayne McKibbon kept it simple in saying, “it’s a big family, and they’re cheap to race.”
