Rick Spencer-Walt Scores Third Straight Victory at Sunset Speedway

INNISFIL, Ontario — The momentum keeps rolling for Spencer-Walt Motorsports as Rick Spencer-Walt scored his third straight feature victory at Sunset Speedway on Sunday night.

The No. 31 was fast from the drop of the first green flag, as Spencer-Walt swept both of his qualifying heats.

Starting eighth for the feature, he wasted no time moving forward, running second with just six laps on the board. He would get alongside the leader one lap later for the top spot, taking the lead on Lap 10.

He would set sail and get out to a sizable lead, though was then slowly tracked down by fresher tires behind him. Miles Tyson was able to get his inside, with the pair running side-by-side for five laps before the caution came out for another competitor spun around.

Spencer-Walt got a good restart, pulling ahead of Tyson on the last lap, to score the victory in the feature.

“We only had one new tire on the right rear; I ran the other right front through my heats, and the lefts are a couple of weeks old so I was trying to maintain as much as I could out front,” Spencer-Walt explained post-race. “But (Miles) Tyson was fast. I said to them on the radio, ‘We’ll finish second tonight, it’s a good points night,’ and I was okay with it. I thought I’d dial some front brake into her and just send her and I sent her into the corner so damn hard, I found some speed. I think we might keep the front brake in her now.”

Ultimately, the late caution played to his benefit as allowing the tires to cool down paid off.

“I think we’re pretty even when you let them cool off and run under caution there for five, six laps,” he continued. “I didn’t warm them up a whole lot; I let them cool off, tried a few things that I know how to do in the car, and the front brake was a big thing. I was able to send it in the corner so hard, and get on the brake and rotate it around – it’s just the car has been amazing, thanks to McColl and them. We’ve been working really hard on it. We started off real slow and struggled with it to be honest with you, and the new tires messed up some set-up stuff, but I think we have her dialed in now.”

With just Fall Velocity remaining on the schedule on September 18 and 19, Spencer-Walt holds a five point advantage over the field.
