INNISFIL, Ontario — After scoring a podium at Jukasa Motor Speedway to start the season, the second Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC OSCAAR Modified event of 2020 will take Emms Racing to Sunset Speedway.
While the team was pleased with their last outing, A.J. Emms notes work has been put in between then and now to be stronger.
“I’m excited to get back to the race track after a long break after Jukasa,” he said. “We were able to go back to the shop and found some issues – hopefully found them all. The issues at Jukasa, hopefully we have those sorted up for Sunset.
“Realistically, we’ve had some good runs in the past at Sunset; we just weren’t able to close the deal there. So we’re hoping to continue with the positive things that we learned over the past couple years there and hopefully translate that into some success this weekend. I mean, there’s going to be some strong competition going into this race but again, just minimize mistakes, do the best we can, and have some fun.”
Emms has run well there at Sunset Speedway previously, scoring a couple heat victories with a podium finish in his last three appearances. In 11 starts at the third-mile oval, he has scored five top-five’s and eight top-10’s.
“I’ve won in some other classes that I’ve raced at Sunset, but to get an OSCAAR Modified victory there would be important to me,” he commented. “It’s the closest track to where I live so it’s one of those places that I attend frequently, not only competing, but watching races when I’m not. So it’s a track that I’d definitely like to get a win at, especially in the unprecedented times. I feel as those as every time you go to the track, especially this year, you want to capitalize on every opportunity that you get.”
This year’s schedule will present a unique opportunity as the modifieds will compete at Sunset Speedway two weeks in a row – September 12 and September 19.
“I’m a big data person so I enjoy looking at some of the things that we learn,” he said. “So I think after Sunset the first time, we’re going to really look back our notes, and we’ll make some detailed notes, and we’ll try and learn from some of the data we’re able to get the first race. I think that with having a different tire than last year, a different compound that might change things. But at the same time, it’s still Sunset Speedway and with the Pinty’s race happening not too long ago, hopefully they’ll be some rubber down in the track and have a good showing both events.
“I think one of the biggest things is going to be the turnover. It’s going to be important in this stretch of races to keep our noses clean and we go off and get consistent finishes, and that we learn from that. We hope that’s a win, but we don’t want to have a situation where we have to re-clip a car or mess around but if that’s what we have to do, then that’s what we will do.”
