With concerns looming large about COVID-19 and everybody’s top safety in mind, Sunset Speedway has elected to postpone their scheduled opening night on Saturday, May 9.

“We have been monitoring recommendations set out by the Ontario Ministry of Health with great detail in order to stay ahead of the current situation with COVID-19,” the track released in a statement. “The health and well-being of our fans, drivers and staff is top priority.”

The track then provided a letter with full details surrounding the decision adding that they will provide “additional details and timelines at a later date” in regards to what happens moving forward.

The decision ultimately includes four weeks of scheduled racing, including the famed Spring Velocity weekend with several traveling series set to be present.

The Spring Velocity was set to serve as the season opener for both the APC United Late Models Series and OSCAAR, with both series releasing statements they support the track in their decision.

“We are aware of today’s announcement by Sunset Speedway  and fully support their decision,” APC Series’ statement read. “We understand at this time it postpones our opening event on May 16th and we will make further announcements as we all deal with this unprecedented time. We hope everyone stays safe and healthy and we hope to see you at the track sooner than later!”

“All of OSCAAR would like to take this opportunity to show our support to Brian Todish Sandra Todish and all the staff at Sunset Speedway,” series president Dave Gainforth said. “OSCAAR will be there to provide the best in short track racing when this is all behind us. This summer we are all going to face unprecedented things but together the promoters, the teams and the fans will ensure our sport we all love will be back stronger thank before. For now please stay safe, stay at home, practice all the guidelines designed to get us back to our normal lives. Stay strong, stay safe and all of OSCAAR looks forward to seeing everyone at the race track very soon.”
