Rob McCall Hopeful for a Fun Sophomore Pro Sprint Campaign

After a solid, yet fun Living Lighting OSCAAR Pro Sprint campaign, it’s no surprise Rob McCall is looking forward to the season ahead of him.

“I am just looking forward to having some fun,” he said. “When I got with the OSCAAR tour last year, it was a big adjustment going to the suspended cars from being a flat-bottom guy for many years. The ride is no comparison as it is a lot smoother, and I really enjoyed myself last year. So we’re really looking to build on what we started last year and hopefully get to the point where we can contend for some wins.”

While admitting that he does not set his expectations too high, McCall says the focus is giving it 100% each time that he is on the track.

“Obviously, the ultimate goal is to win the race, but as long as we’ve done everything that we could then we’re happy with that, and obviously any errors or misjudgments we make – try and build on them so they don’t happen again,” he explained.

One of the tracks in which he did not perform well last year was Sauble Speedway, as he was caught in a qualifying mishap, ultimately leading to him not being able to run the feature. That reason, along with the fact that he has always liked going to the beach, is why those dates are currently circled on his calendar for 2020.

Overall looking back on last year, though, he was able to put together a solid campaign with four top-10’s, including a third-place finish in the season finale at Peterborough Speedway.

“I can’t complain,” he reflected. “We had a few gremlins, but that’s racing; sometimes don’t always go perfectly as everybody can contest to. I can’t really say anything too negative. We learned a lot being our first season, missed a couple races due to an engine failure, but again, I don’t think it was anybody’s fault, just stuff that happened.

“But we’re looking forward to gaining on what we learned last year, which was a lot given that my suspended car experience is very limited, and building on that.”

The rookie campaign led to several different lessons about the suspended-pro sprint cars, including how much body roll they have compared to the non-suspended midgets.

“The biggest learning curve for me was if the car was handling, you could flat-foot most of the race tracks, something that you can’t do in the other cars; that took some getting used to,” he added. “There’s also the body roll, chassis roll is something that I wasn’t used to, so that took some time. it was probably two-thirds through the season that I felt comfortable that the car was underneath me even though it was moving around a lot.

“Then of course, trying to figure out shocks, springs, combinations, and how to go about that – so basically chassis tuning was a big learning curve. I wouldn’t say we’re anywhere close to on top of it, but certainly a lot learned last year.”

Although the focus will be continuing to get better himself, there will also be some family competition as his daughter Amanda is preparing for her rookie campaign.

“It’s been something that ever since we started racing 20 years ago, I wanted to do,” McCall said of racing with family. “Racing with a family member – daughter, son, whatever it may be – that is the best thing in my mind the best thing that could happen. Being able to spend time at the track with my family, doing what we love, and trying to better each other so to speak.”

McCall’s advice to not only his daughter, but the other rookies heading into the season – get comfortable behind the wheel.

“If you have previous experience, it’s a lot easier to get comfortable, but the biggest thing is to get comfortable,” he commented. “Trying too hard can sometimes be worse than not trying hard enough, and just learn as you go so to speak. Some people are natural and they catch on to it right away, but most times it takes time and seat time, practice and learning what it’s going to do in different situations.”
