Starting off this past season just as he ended off the year before, Daniel Hawn would go back-to-back, being crowned the 2019 Living Lighting, Scott Reinhart Trailer Sales Ltd OSCAAR Pro Sprint Champion.
“I’m extremely honored to be crowned the series championship again,” he said. “We knew that we were going to be the car to beat, but with racing you still need some lady luck. We prepared ourselves with all the spares needed if we were to have any issues.
“Points racing for a championship is very different then running part time and going for wins. You need to ensure that you have all you shit together in case of issues.”
The season began in victory lane at Sunset Speedway, with Hawn victorious in both of his heats before pacing every single lap of the feature en route to a win. He then backed it up with another hat trick at Grand Bend Speedway just a week later to give himself a healthy early advantage in the standings.
Returning to Sunset at the end of July did not change things up. Hawn drove his way from the back to the lead in the first four laps to win the first feature, repeating the seat feat in the second 25-lap affair to make it a sweep on the night. A week later at Flamboro Speedway, he got the lead on Lap 2 and did not look back en route to winning despite being challenged on a mid-race restart.
He started off the first trip of the year to Peterborough Speedway strong, by once again winning both of his heats. He also made his way through traffic quickly in the feature to move into second by the third lap. However, he was unable to chase down James Stanley for the top spot by the checkered, ultimately scoring a runner-up finish.
He would stay out of victory lane long, though, rebounding at the end of August to grab the checkered flag at Flamboro after getting by Stanley on the 10th circuit. He then won both of his qualifiers at Sauble Speedway a week later, before pacing the field every single lap en route to another win.
The return to Grand Bend to kick off September did not go any differently, either, as Hawn dominated en route to the victory. He appeared to be on pace to do the same at Sunset a couple weeks later after taking the lead on Lap 8 of the first feature, but a blown motor in the final laps relegated him to a runner-up finish. He rebounded in the second 25-lap affair, putting together a dominating performance to grab the checkered flag.
He got another win at Flamboro, taking the lead on a Lap 2 restart and not looking back for the rest of the event. He then capped off the year on a high, scoring a dominating victory in the Autumn Colours Classic feature at Peterborough.
Through his young career, Hawn has been fast from the moment that he got behind the wheel of a Pro Sprint and this year was no different, as he continued to break and extend records in the all-time statistics for the series. The success has been no accident, though, as a lot of work goes on by the Hawn Motorsports team behind the scenes.
“One thing I can tell you is that Saturday night after the races the car is unloaded, put on scales and everything recorded, we upload all our mychron data to a laptop and review it on Sunday,” he said. “I am extremely lucky to have Adam come to my shop 2-5 days a week and help me and my brother (Tyler) on our cars. There are no words that I could say that would make me show my appreciation!
“We also do a lot of testing with my pro. We have chopped it up and changed it at least once or twice through the year (every year since we owned it) to try and further our knowledge.”
