INNISFIL, Ontario — Despite getting caught up in a couple incidents, Rick Spencer-Walt continued his strong season at Sunset Speedway with a pair of third-place finishes on Saturday night.
Laying down a lap of 14.781 seconds in time trials, Rick Spencer-Walt would qualify fifth for the first 35-lap feature. He would avoid the initial incident in the opening laps, though dropped back to sixth by the second caution at Lap 8. He would get by Kendra Adams to get back into the top-five on Lap 11, before passing Paul Maltese for fourth with 15 laps to go.
As the top-three battled for the lead, it would allow Spencer-Walt to close the gap, with him getting by Travis Hallyburton before the caution came out on the last lap for a spin. The race would ultimately be called at that point.
Starting fifth for the second feature, he would quickly move up to fourth on the second lap before the first caution on the second lap. Restarting on the inside of the third row, he and a fellow competitor would make contact, before Spencer-Walt was slammed in the door by Daniel Montanari. Luckily, the caution came out a couple laps later for a solo spin, allowing Spencer-Walt time to head down pit road to make repairs.
Restarting at the back of the field, he would move up to 11th, before moving up into ninth on Lap 10. Spencer-Walt would go to make a move three-wide for ninth on Lap 12, but Gord Shepherd chopped down, resulting in Spencer-Walt going around.
Restarting back in 13th once again, he would make his way up to 10th by Lap 14, passing Chris McIssac for eighth at the halfway mark. Spencer-Walt continued to move forward, breaking back into the top-five with 21 laps on the board. He would move into fourth with 10 laps to go, and passed Gord Shepherd coming to the checkered for another third-place finish.
To date, with 11 features now in the books for the 2019 campaign, Spencer-Walt has scored three wins, four runner-ups, a pair of thirds, a fourth, and a seventh. As a result, he currently leads the track division standings. He is also currently leading the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I Provincial Standings, and sits 31st in the national standings (despite some United States competitors having ran twice the amount of features), just six points out of the top-30.
Spencer-Walt will be back in action on Saturday, August 3 for the next night of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I competition at Sunset Speedway.
