INNISFIL, Ontario — In an unexpected return behind the wheel on Sunday afternoon, Doug Wilman would drive the No. 14 Mini Stock to a top-15 finish.
The past couple of weeks have not been kind to the SKLD Motorsports team, with Shiann Wilman making contact with the wall during practice on June 8. With the team still trying to sort out the mechanical gremlins, the decision was made to take their rookie out of the seat, in return using Doug Wilman’s experience to diagnose the issues.
Wilman ran with the pack right from the drop of the initial green flag, placing fifth in both of his qualifying heats.
Come time for the feature, he’d avoid an early spin by a fellow competitor on the opening lap to run 12th. He’d battle through the opening laps, including closely side-by-side with C.K. Thompson at the halfway mark. He’d hold off Thompson to keep the 12th spot, crossing the finish line with a 12th-place finish.
In the second feature, Wilman would start 15th, looking to make up ground early as he got alongside Curtis Stewart for 12th at Lap 10, completing the pass a lap later. The strong run would not last the full event, though, as mechanical issues saw Wilman head down pit road on Lap 19, ending his race early. He would be credited with a 16th-place finish.
SKLD Motorsports plans to put Shiann Wilman back behind the wheel of the car on Saturday, July 6 at Sunset Speedway after she gets some practice laps this coming week.
Wilman’s No. 14 Mini Stock is proudly sponsored by SGCG Motorsports, D’s Original Smoke Shack, Foster Motorsports, Mary Kay Cosmetics, RB Graffix, and EPIC Racewear.
