INNISFIL, Ontario — The strong runs continued for Rick Spencer-Walt at Sunset Speedway as he scored a second and seventh in the pair of features on Saturday night.
The No. 31 Late Model was quick right from the first laps on-track, as Spencer-Walt set the fastest lap during time trials. Starting on pole for the first 35-lap feature, he held off the challenges from behind despite a series of restarts through the first half.
The fourth restart did not go in his favor, as he got sideways off of turn two, causing him to drop back a couple spots. He was able to quickly make them up, moving back up into third before the next caution flag came out with 16 laps to go. He then used the final restart to his advantage, making another pass to cross the finish line with a second-place finish.
The inverted start for the second feature would see Spencer-Walt start ninth in the feature, with him immediately working his way forward, running seventh as of the first caution at Lap 7. Restarting on the inside of row four, he’d find himself battling for a top-five spot amongst the leaders. Unfortunately, that did not go as planned as the pair ahead of him would make contact, sending them both around. Spencer-Walt would slow up to avoid the pair of them, but contact from behind sent him around. As a result, he would be sent to the tail of the field.
Restarting 16th, he would work at moving forward, though was caught up in another incident when another competitor went around. Restarting at the back of the field once again at the halfway mark, he began to work his way back forward, moving up into the top-10 on Lap 30.
He then put together a strong run to the checkered flag, crossing the finish line with a seventh-place finish.
To date, with four features now in the books for the 2019 campaign, Spencer-Walt has scored three runner-ups and a seventh. As a result, he currently leads the track division standings by five points over Travis Hallyburton.
Spencer-Walt will be back in action on Saturday, June 15 for the next night of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I competition at Sunset Speedway.
