Danny Benedict Goes Back-to-Back at the Velocity 250

Danny Benedict began the magical stretch that led to winning the 2018 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Provincial Championship with a win in last year’s Velocity 250. He kept the magic going as he would also pick up the victory in this year’s running at Sunset Speedway.

Taylor Holdaway won the first heat ahead of Nick Goetz, Jordan Lawrence, Travis Hallyburton, Josh Stade, Rick Spencer-Walt, Lane Zardo, Ernie Fumerton, and Kent Nuhn.

The second heat didn’t start off smoothly as Jeff Richards made significant contact with the turn one wall, collecting T.J. Edwards in the process. Danny Benedict picked up the checkered flag ahead of Jason Parker, Gord Shepherd, Thayne Hallyburton, Dwayne Baker, Edwards, and Brandon Feeney.

Lane Zardo won the third heat ahead of Travis Hallyburton, Spencer-Walt, Holdaway, Lawrence, Fumerton, Goetz, Stade, and Nuhn.

Danny Benedict went for the daily double ahead of Baker, Parker, Shepherd, Thayne Hallyburton, Edwards, and Feeney.

Come feature time, Taylor Holdaway started pole ahead of Dwayne Baker, Lane Zardo, Gord Shepherd, Jason Parker, Travis Hallyburton, Danny Benedict, Jo Lawrence, Thayne Hallyburton, T.J. Edwards, Josh Stade, Ernie Fumerton, Rick Spencer-Walt, Jeff Richards, Marvin Freiburger, Kent Nuhn, Nick Goetz, and Brandon Feeney.

Holdaway grabbed the early advantage ahead of Baker and Shepherd, with Zardo and Travis Hallyburton side-by-side for fourth, as Parker and Lawrence battled for sixth. Parker got the sixth spot on Lap 4, with Benedict getting alongside Lawrence next. Both Hallyburton and Parker would get by Zardo, enduring some contact in their battle for fourth on Lap 6. Hallyburton would get the spot a lap later, with Benedict fifth ahead of Zardo and Lawrence as Stade got alongside Parker for eighth. Behind them, Thayne Hallyburton would run 10th as Spencer-Walt and Goetz ran side-by-side for 12th. Stade would take eighth on Lap 10 ahead of Parker, Spencer-Walt, Goetz, Thayne, and Fumerton.

With 14 laps on the board, Holdaway continued to lead Baker, Shepherd, Benedict, Travis Hallyburton, Zardo, Lawrence, Stade, Parker, Spencer-Walt, and Goetz. The field would remain single-file until the first caution waved at Lap 19 for Spencer-Walt slowing with a mechanical problem that would end his race early.

Holdaway got a good restart to keep the lead as Baker and Shepherd battled for second. Baker held onto the spot, with Benedict getting alongside Shepherd for third. The second caution would come out, though, as Fumerton would go around in turn four on Lap 20. Holdaway got another good restart as Baker and Shepherd once again battled for second, with Benedict and Travis Hallyburton side-by-side for fourth behind them. Baker held onto the spot, with Benedict slipping into third on Lap 26. Shepherd now ran fourth ahead of Hallyburton, Lawrence, Parker, and Stade.

Baker would get alongside Holdaway for the top spot on Lap 29, taking the lead two laps later. Benedict continued to run third ahead of Shepherd, Travis Hallyburton, Lawrence, and Parker as Stade and Goetz battled for eighth. Goetz got the spot on Lap 34, with Thayne Hallyburton and Zardo side-by-side for 10th. Benedict would get alongside Holdaway for second with 40 laps to go, with Goetz getting alongside Parker two laps later for seventh. Benedict took the runner-up spot on Lap 39 ahead of Holdaway, Shepherd, Travis, Lawrence, Goetz, Parker, Stade, and Thayne. Goetz continued his climb forward, passing Lawrence for sixth on Lap 42, with Stade getting alongside Parker for eighth a lap later.

Goetz continued his way forward, passing Travis Hallyburton for fifth at Lap 50, as the caution came out for Zardo having a problem. With 25 laps to go, Baker led Benedict, Holdaway, Shepherd, Goetz, Hallyburton, Lawrence, Parker, Stade, Thayne Hallyburton, Fumerton, Freiburger, and Edwards.

Baker got a good restart to keep the lead ahead of Benedict, Shepherd, Holdaway, Goetz, and Travis Hallyburton. Goetz would continue to move forward, passing Holdaway for fourth on Lap 54, as Travis Hallyburton continued to run sixth ahead of Lawrence, Parker, and Fumerton. Lawrence would then get alongside Hallyburton on Lap 56, completing the pass a lap later. Parker continued to run eighth ahead of Fumerton, Thayne Hallyburton, and Freiburger, with Stade getting alongside Freiburger with 16 laps to go.

The battle for the lead got interesting at Lap 60 as Benedict would get alongside Baker for the top spot, taking the lead a lap later. Shepherd continued to run third ahead of Goetz, with Lawrence alongside Holdaway for fifth. Goetz would get alongside Shepherd on Lap 63, completing the pass a lap later to take third. Holdaway ran fifth ahead of Lawrence, Travis Hallyburton, Parker, Fumerton, Thayne Hallyburton, and Stade.

With 67 laps on the board, Benedict led Baker, Goetz and Shepherd, as Lawrence battled Holdaway for fifth ahead of Travis Hallyburton, Parker, Fumerton, Thayne Hallyburton, Stade, Zardo, Freiburger, and Edwards. Stade would get alongside Thayne for 10th with five laps to go, as the battle for fifth continued.

Danny Benedict took the victory ahead of Dwayne Baker, Nick Goetz, Gord Shepherd, Jordan Lawrence, Taylor Holdaway, Travis Hallyburton, Jason Parker, Ernie Fumerton, Josh Stade, Thayne Hallyburton, Lane Zardo, Marvin Freiburger, and T.J. Edwards.
