After a successful Mini Stock career to date, Melissa Bullen will take the next step in her career as she will make her OSCAAR Modified debut this weekend at Sunset Speedway.
“(I am) very excited about this upcoming weekend and getting the opportunity to race my families’ open wheel modified,” she told SHORT TRACK MUSINGS. “I watched my brother (Branden Bullen) race in this division for two years and to be able to now have the chance to do it myself, I’m extremely thankful. Although some nerves and anxiousness are there I’m overall looking forward to it!”
Being that it is her series debut, she admits that she hasn’t set any high goals for this weekend due to the big difference between a modified and a four-cylinder. That said, she hopes to be able to start and finish the event on Sunday, while learning as much as she can against open-wheel’s best competitors. She won’t go into the weekend totally green, either, as she has been taking part in practice days to start getting used to the car.
“Our team has done multiple tests, in which all went significantly well,” she commented. “My team has seen an improvement each and every time I went out which is a great boost in my confidence for this weekend! I have sure learnt a lot already about the difference in the mod to mini but I for sure have a lot more to learn and won’t get there without seat time!”
She enters the OSCAAR ranks following a successful Mini Stock campaign at Peterborough Speedway this past season. Although beginning her career at Sunset Speedway, her team made the call to switch home tracks for 2018.
“At first, I didn’t know how to feel about it but looking back it was the best decision we have made,” she said. “Josh and myself had a season we will never forget accomplishing our team’s first feature win, 18 top-10’s, seven top-five’s, and overall Josh finishing sixth and Melissa finishing ninth in Peterborough Speedways 2018 Mini Stock Standings!”
The debut late in the season, combined with the success, has certainly stirred the rumor mill heading into 2019 as many wonder if the Bullens are set to return to OSCAAR full-time. While stating the future holds a lot in store for Bullen Racing, there are no definite plans set as to what they’ll be doing just yet.
