Rick Spencer-Walt Scores AP Exhaust 100 Victory at Sunset Speedway

Taking the lead just past halfway, Rick Spencer-Walt led the rest of the way en route to winning the APC Series United Late Models of Ontario Tour AP Exhaust 100 at Sunset Speedway on Saturday night.

Matt Pritiko would set the quickest time in qualifying at 14.311 seconds ahead of Shae Gemmell (14.335), Treyten Lapcevich (14.341), Rick Spencer-Walt (14.403), and Brandon Watson (14.412). Jo Lawrence was sixth fastest ahead of Jake Sheridan, Dale Shaw, J.R. Fitzpatrick, and Junior Farrelly.

The re-draw, though, would see Jo Lawrence start pole ahead of Shae Gemmell, Junior Farrelly, Jake Sheridan, Matt Pritiko, Treyten Lapcevich, Brandon Watson, J.R. Fitzpatrick, Dale Shaw, Rick Spencer-Walt, Patrick Freel, Steve Laking, Billy Schwartzenburg, Blair Wickett, Tom Gibbons, Brandon Verhoven, Todd Delisle, Paighton Jacobs, Matt Box, Shawn McGlynn, Jade Franklin, Shawn Chenoweth, Ryan Kimball, and Andrew Gresel.

Gemmell took the early lead ahead of Sheridan, with Lapcevich and Cox side-by-side for third. Lapcevich got the spot on Lap 3, bringing Fitzpatrick and Spencer-Walt through with him over the next couple of laps. Pritiko would then move into sixth on Lap 7 ahead of Shaw, Farrelly, and Lawrence. Lawrence would then get by Farrelly for seventh a lap later, with Laking and Watson following him through. Farrelly now ran ninth ahead of Schwartzenburg, Freel, Wickett, and McGlynn.

Fitzpatrick would then get alongside Lapcevich for third at Lap 13 ahead of Spencer-Walt, Pritiko, Shaw, Lawrence, Watson, Laking, Farrelly, Schwartzenburg, Freel, and McGlynn. Schwartzenburg then got alongside Farrelly for 11th on Lap 17, while Shaw passed Pritiko for sixth two laps later.

With 21 laps on the board, Gemmell led Sheridan, as Fitzpatrick and Lapcevich battled for third ahead of Spencer-Walt, Shaw, and Pritiko. Lapcevich would hold off Fitzpatrick for the spot, with Spencer-Walt passing Fitzpatrick for fourth at the quarter-mark of the event. Fitzpatrick now ran fifth ahead of Shaw, Pritiko, Lawrence, and Watson.

Spencer-Walt then got alongside Lapcevich for third, but was unable to complete the pass as Shaw got alongside Fitzpatrick for fifth at Lap 30. Spencer-Walt then got back alongside Lapcevich for third, completing the pass three laps later as the battle for fifth continued. Behind them, Pritiko ran seventh ahead of Lawrence, Laking, Watson, and Schwartzenburg.

Spencer-Walt would get alongside Sheridan for second on Lap 37, but the caution would come out for Pritiko having a problem. The caution would see Kimball, Delisle, Franklin, Box, Gibbons, and Watson hit pit road for adjustments. With 63 laps to go, Gemmell led Sheridan, Spencer-Walt, Lapcevich, Shaw, Fitzpatrick, Lawrence, Laking, Schwartzenburg, McGlynn, Freel, Wickett, Chenoweth, Vanhoven, Pritiko, and Gibbons.

The restart saw the second caution as Gresel ran into problems in turn one and two.

The second attempt was clean with Gemmell and Sheridan side-by-side for the lead. Sheridan took the top spot on Lap 40 ahead of Gemmell, with Lapcevich and Spencer-Walt side-by-side for third as Fitzpatrick and Shaw battled for fifth. Fitzpatrick got the spot on Lap 42 ahead of Shaw, with Laking clearing Lawrence for seventh a lap later.

Spencer-Walt would get the third spot on Lap 44 ahead of Lapcevich, Fitzpatrick, Shaw and Laking as Schwartzenburg got alongside Lawrence for eighth. Shaw would get back alongside Fitzpatrick for fifth at Lap 46, as Schwartzenburg fell back in line behind Lawrence a lap later.

At the halfway mark of the event, Sheridan led with Spencer-Walt alongside Gemmell for second, completing the pass on Lap 51. Lapcevich ran fourth ahead of Shaw, Fitzpatrick, Laking, Lawrence and Schwartzenburg as McGlynn and Pritiko ran side-by-side for 10th.

Spencer-Walt would track down Sheridan for the top spot, getting alongside him on Lap 55, completing the pass a lap later. Gemmell continued to run third, as Shaw got alongside Lapcevich for fourth ahead of Fitzpatrick, Laking, Lawrence, and Schwartzenburg. Laking would try to pass Fitzpatrick for fifth, but was unable to complete the pass.

Spencer-Walt would begin to stretch his lead out as Gemmell got alongside Sheridan for second on Lap 61, with Shaw and Lapcevich still side-by-side for fourth ahead of Fitzpatrick. Gemmell took the runner-up spot on Lap 63, with Shaw getting alongside Sheridan for third. Shaw got the spot, getting alongside Gemmell for second with 35 laps to go, as Lapcevich got alongside Sheridan for fourth. Gemmell held on to second spot ahead of Shaw, as Lapcevich took fourth from Sheridan.

The third caution came out on Lap 67 for Kimball going around off of turn two. Under the yellow flag, Watson and Pritiko both headed down pit road for adjustments. With 23 laps to go, Spencer-Walt led Gemmell, Shaw, Lapcevich, Sheridan, Fitzpatrick, Lawrence, Laking, Schwartzenburg, McGlynn, and Farrelly.

The restart would see Schwartzenburg go around in turn two. The second attempt was clean with Spencer-Walt continuing to lead ahead of Gemmell and Lapcevich as Shaw and Fitzpatrick ran side-by-side for fourth. Fitzpatrick got the spot, getting alongside Lapcevich for third at Lap 72.

The caution would come out two laps later, though, as Farrelly wrecked going into turn one. Under the yellow flag, Watson once again made his way down pit road for adjustments. With 26 laps to go, Spencer-Walt led Gemmell, Lapcevich, Shaw, Fitzpatrick, Laking, Sheridan, Lawrence, Box, Gibbons, Kimball, Priitko, and Delisle.

Spencer-Walt got a good restart ahead of Gemmell and Shaw, as Lapcevich and Laking ran side-by-side for fifth. There would be contact between the pair, including Laking into the outside frontstretch wall to draw the fifth caution flag on Lap 76. Both drivers were able to continue without any issues.

The restart would see Gresel run into problems for the sixth yellow flag. The second attempt was clean with Spencer-Walt leading Gemmell as Shaw and Lapcevich ran side-by-side for third ahead of Fitzpatrick and Sheridan. Behind them, Lawrence and Laking ran side-by-side for seventh ahead of Gibbons. Pritiko would then get alongside Gibbons for ninth on Lap 79, completing the pass a lap later, with Schwartzenburg, Box, and Watson following him through.

Sheridan would get alongside Fitzpatrick for fifth at Lap 85, with Shaw clearing Lapcevich a lap later for third. Fitzpatrick held onto fifth ahead of Sheridan and Lawrence, but Sheridan would get right back alongside with 12 laps to go. Once again, Fitzpatrick held off the charge, with Lawrence getting alongside Sheridan for sixth.

With 10 laps to go, Shaw got alongside Gemmell for second, but had to fall back in line as they went by the lap car of Jacobs. Shaw would get right back alongside after they cleared her, though, with Lapcevich continuing to run fourth as Fitzpatrick and Lawrence battled side-by-side. Lawrence grabbed the fifth spot with four laps to go ahead of Fitzpatrick as they went by Jacobs.

Rick Spencer-Walt scored the feature victory with Dale Shaw second after he completed the pass on Shae Gemmell with three laps to go. Treyten Lapcevich finished fourth, followed by Jo Lawrence, Matt Pritiko, J.R. Fitzpatrick, Jake Sheridan, Steve Laking, and Billy Schwartzenburg.
