Rick Spencer-Walt Picks Up First Career APC Series Victory at Sunset

INNSFIL, Ontario — The win streak for Rick Spencer-Walt continues in style as he won the AP Exhaust 100 on Saturday night at Sunset Speedway for his first career APC Auto Parts United Late Models of Ontario Series victory.

Spencer-Walt was quick from the start of the night, posting the fourth quickest time in qualifying at 14.403 seconds. The re-draw would see him start 10th, but he would move forward immediately, running fifth with just seven laps complete. Spencer-Walt would then pass series points leader J.R. Fitzpatrick for fourth at the quarter-mark of the event, getting alongside Treyten Lapcevich for third shortly thereafter. It would take away, but he would eventually complete the pass on Lap 33 to move into third. He would then get alongside Jake Sheridan for second on Lap 37, but the caution would come out for a fellow driver having a problem.

Restarting third, he’d battle side-by-side once again with Treyten Lapcevich, clearing him on Lap 44. He would then chase down the leaders, getting alongside Shae Gemmell for second, completing the pass at the halfway mark of the feature. Spencer-Walt would track down Sheridan for the top spot, getting alongside him on Lap 55, completing the pass a lap later.

From there on, he would stretch his lead out as he left the field behind him until the third caution flew at Lap 67. Despite four restarts over the back half of the feature, Spencer-Walt was able to fend off the field on each one of those, crossing the finish line in first to score the feature victory.

“We were free to start, but I set it up that way – well, I didn’t set it up that way; Jr (Hanley) set it up that way,” he said in victory lane. “Man, I got to thank Jr for everything he has done for us. This f***ing thing is unreal.”

Notably, one of the surprises of the night for some was seeing Spencer-Walt elect the outside lane for the numerous restarts, but he said that was because both he and the car like the outside groove at Sunset Speedway.

“It looked like we were pushing at the start to get by guys, but a lot of them started off too tight or free, and we were cutting the bottom so well, I was able to drive under them,” he added. “Then we were able to just cruise for awhile. Last time we were here, we had to push from Lap 6 or whenever we got spun; this time I was able to save a bit of tire up front if there was a late restart.”

With being his first APC Series victory of his career, there were obviously a slew of thank yous to deliver in victory lane.

“First they don’t sponsor us, but AP Exhaust. If they weren’t here putting up the money for us to do this, it wouldn’t be possible tor tracks and the series to keep going. So I have to thank them for what they’re doing for the series, and racing in general in Ontario, Canada, whatever you want to say. APC has it going on right now. Auto Trim Design wraps this car and it looks bad to the bone; I love this design. GreenSteelRoof.ca, Gohydrovac, my grandpa is here from The Frame Shop.

“I have to thank Jr Hanley; he built this car from the chassis up, and obviously you can see it’s unbelievable. We also have Mike McColl helping us with the shock program and when you get the best guys working on the car and the best guy in the world supporting you, and I have to thank my baby Jesus for my smokin’ hot wife.”

With the latest results, Spencer-Walt has now posted seven wins and 14 top-fives in his last 14 races at Sauble Speedway and Sunset Speedway, combined. It is worth noting that Spencer-Walt has won the last four events he has entered – twin features at Sauble, Great Lakes 75-lapper at Sauble, and the AP Exhaust 100 at Sunset.

The Eldon Wallis-owned team will return to Sauble Speedway on Thursday, August 16 and on Saturday, August 18 looking to continue the win streak. Spencer-Walt currently leads the track standings by six points over Jason Parker.

The following weekend, they will be at Sunset Speedway for the fifth round of the Great Lakes Concrete Series, where Spencer-Walt leads Jordan Lawrence by eight points with two races remaining.
