Nick Goetz Leads Flag-to-Flag in Late Model Feature at Sunset Speedway

After setting quick time in qualifying, Nick Goetz led flag-to-flag in the Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park Late Model feature on Saturday night at Sunset Speedway.

Jordan Lawrence would set the quickest time of the session at 14.555 seconds, but returning to the pits before the session was over saw him disqualified.

Nick Goetz got the pole with a lap of 14.610 seconds ahead of Rick Spencer-Walt (14.672), Gord Shepherd (14.680), Danny Benedict (14.733), and Al Inglis (14.757). Paul Maltese qualified sixth, followed by Kendra Adams, Ron Quesnelle, Connor James, and Ernie Fumerton. Mike Wilkinson qualified 11th, followed by Nic Montanari, Billy Zardo, Chris McIssac, and Lorne Quackenbush. Taylor Holdaway had shown up to race, but broke the motor in practice.

The drop of the green saw a battle for the lead between Goetz and Spencer-Walt ahead of Benedict and Shepherd, as Inglis and Maltese battled for fifth, with Adams and Quesnelle side-by-side for seventh. Inglis for the fifth spot with four laps on the board ahead of Maltese, as the battle for seventh continued.

Goetz cleared Spencer-Walt for the lead on Lap 5, allowing Benedict to get alongside him for second ahead of Shepherd, Inglis, and Maltese. Adams would get alongside Maltese for sixth at Lap 7 ahead of Quesnelle, Fumerton, James, and Wilkinson. Unfortunately, Zardo’s race came to an end on Lap 8 as he head down pit road.

The race’s first yellow flag waved on Lap 10 for Wilkinson and Fumerton getting tangled up together in turn two. With 25 laps to go, Goetz led Spencer-Walt, Benedict, Shepherd, Maltese, Adams, Quesnelle, James, Montanari, McIssac, Wilkinson, Fumerton, and Zardo.

The restart saw a battle for the lead, with Goetz taking the top spot on Lap 12 ahead of Spencer-Walt and Benedict. Shepherd would then get alongside Benedict for third a lap later as Maltese ran fifth ahead of Adams, Inglis, and Quesnelle. Quesnelle then got alongside Inglis for seventh at Lap 16, with Adams getting alongside Maltese a lap later.

With 19 laps on the board, Goetz led Spencer-Walt as Benedict and Shepherd continued to battle for third. Shepherd got the spot on lap 20 ahead of Benedict, as the battle for fifth continued between Maltese and Adams. Maltese got the spot a lap later ahead of Adams, Inglis, Quesnelle, James, Montanari, Wilkinson, Zardo, and McIssac.

The battle for fifth wasn’t over, as Adams got back alongside Maltese at Lap 27, with the field falling back single-file as Maltese held off the charge, with Adams slotting back in line two laps later. Behind them, James would challenge Quesnelle for eighth, but was unable to complete the pass.

Nick Goetz scored the win ahead of Rick Spencer-Walt, Gord Shepherd, Danny Benedict, Paul Maltese, Kendra Adams, Al Inglis, Ron Quesnelle, Connor James, Nic Montanari, Mike Wilkinson, Billy Zardo, and Chris McIssac.
