Battling back and forth with Matt Haufe in the closing laps, Robin Jongen scored the Eastern Ontario Legends Series feature victory on Saturday night at Sunset Speedway.
The night didn’t start off cleanly, with Rob Black blowing his motor on the fourth lap of the first heat. Matt Haufe won the first heat ahead of Jeff Drimmie, Andre Fiorini, Mike Gettliffe, Keith McLeod, Rick Eades, Rick Spencer-Walt, and Dawson Drimmie.
Robin Jongen won the second heat ahead of James McArthur, Wes Cuthbertson, Andrew Massey, Glenn Lloyd, Willie Howles, Don Arnott and Joe Sherman.
The third heat featured a quick caution with Brandon Thurby going around on Lap 1. Parker Traves won ahead of Adam Cuthbertson, Miles Tyson, Cole McFadden, Paul Pierik, Shawn Murray, Cory Richardson, and Jeff Forsey.
Matt Haufe went for the daily double ahead of McLeod, Fiorini, Jeff Drimmie, Eades, Gettliffe and Spencer-Walt. Notably, Dawson Drimmie failed to finish after stalling on Lap 6.
Robin Jongen went for the daily double ahead of Wes Cuthbertson, Massey, McArthur, Howles, Lloyd, Arnott and Sherman.
Parker Traves went for the daily double ahead of Adam Cuthbertson, McFadden, Tyson, Pierik, Thurby, Murray, Richardson and Forsey.
Come feature time, Matt Haufe started pole ahead of Parker Traves, Robin Jongen, Adam Cuthbertson, Wes Cuthbertson, James McArthur, Andre Fiorini, Jeff Drimmie, Andrew Massey, Miles Tyson, Keith McLeod, Cole McFadden, Mike Gettliffe, Paul Pierik, Willie Howles, Glenn Lloyd, Rick Eades, Shawn Murray, Don Arnott, Brandon Thurby, Cory Richardson, Joe Sherman, Jeff Forsey, and Rick Spencer-Walt.
Haufe jumped out to the early lead ahead of Traves and Jongen, with Jongen passing Traves for second on the second lap. Adam Cuthbertson ran fourth ahead of Wes Cuthbertson, McFadden, Tyson, McArthur, Fiorini and McLeod as Gettliffe and Drimmie ran side-by-side for 11th at Lap 5. Tyson then got alongside McFadden for sixth at Lap 6, but was unable to complete the pass as he fell back in line, with Gettliffe clearing Drimmie for 11th on Lap 8.
Further up the field, Adam Cuthbertson got alongside Traves for third at Lap 9, completing the pass a lap later. Wes Cuthbertson continued to run fifth, with Tyson and McFadden once again side-by-side for sixth. McFadden would clear Tyson on Lap 13, with both drivers passing Wes.
Wes now ran seventh ahead of Fiorini, McLeod, McArthur, Gettliffe, Thurby, Pierik and Drimmie as Murray and Massey ran side-by-side for 15th at the halfway mark. Murray would clear Massey a lap later, with the caution flying on Lap 18 for Gettliffe going around in turn two. With 13 laps to go, Haufe led Jongen, Traves, Adam Cuthbertson, McFadden, Tyson, Wes Cuthbertson, McLeod, McArthur, Pierik, Drimmie, Murray, Massey, Gettliffe, Thurby, Eades, Howles, Spencer-Walt, Sherman, Lloyd, Richardson and Forsey.
The restart saw a battle for the lead between Haufe and Jongen ahead of Adam Cuthbertston, Tyson and Traves. Haufe got the top spot on Lap 20, but the caution flew two laps later as a result of Spencer-Walt spinning in turn two.
The restart saw another battle for the lead beween Haufe and Jongen, with Tyson side-by-side with Cuthberetson for third. Traves now ran fifth ahead of McFadden and Wes Cuthbertson, with McLeod passing Wes for seventh on Lap 25, just before the caution flew for debris.
Jongen would clear Haufe on the restart ahead of Tyson, but the caution flew once again for Pierik going around in turn two.
Jongen got another good restart to keep the lead ahead of Haufe and Tyson. Adam Cuthbertson then got alongside Tyson for third on Lap 27, passing him with two laps to go, as McFadden got alongside Tyson next.
Robin Jongen led the rest of the way en route to scoring the victory ahead of Matt Haufe, Adam Cuthbertson, Cole McFadden and Miles Tyson. Parker Traves finished sixth, followed by Wes Cuthbertson, Keith McLeod, Brandon Thurby and Jeff Drimmie.
Jamie McArthur finished 11th, followed by Shawn Murray, Paul Pierik, Mike Gettliffe, Andrew Massey, Rick Spencer-Walt, Rick Eades, Glenn Lloyd, Willie Howles, Cory Richardson, Jeff Forsey, Joe Sherman, Andre Fiorini, and Don Arnott.
