Nick Goetz Sweeps Late Model Features at Sunset Speedway

For the first time this season, a driver won both Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park Late Model features at Sunset Speedway. After leading flag-to-flag in the first event, Nick Goetz drove through the field to win the second 35-lapper.

Following the invert, it’d be Taylor Holdaway on pole ahead of Mike Meyer, Brittney Gresel, Mike Wilkinson, Chris Morrow, Dwayne Baker, Billy Zardo, Thayne Hallyburton, Kendra Adams, Jordan Latimer, Gord Shepherd, Nick Goetz, Ernie Fumerton, Al Inglis, Paul Maltese, Danny Benedict, Travis Hallyburton and Rick Spencer-Walt.

The start did not go off well as the field got bottled up, with Thayne Hallyburton tagging the back of Baker. The contact would turn Baker sideways and he’d catch the right rear of Zardo, turning him into the frontstretch wall. Thankfully, both drivers would be okay without injury. However, their nights would be over already.

The second attempt was a little cleaner, but still produced a caution. Gresel tagged Meyer in the middle of turns three and four, stacking up the field, with Fumerton spinning in the back half.

The third attempt went cleanly, with Holdaway leading ahead of Wilkinson as Morrow and Meyer went side-by-side for third. Morrow got the spot, with Gresel getting alongside him for third on Lap 2 as Adams and Meyer went side-by-side for fifth. Morrow got the third spot on Lap 3 ahead of Gresel, Adams, Meyer and Latimer, with Goetz alongside Inglis for eighth.

Shepherd then got alongside Adams for fifth on Lap 5. Unfortunately, Adams’ strong early run came to an end a lap later, as she’d go around for the spin in turns one and two. With 30 laps to go, Holdaway led Wilkinson, Morrow, Gresel, Shepherd, Latimer, Goetz, Inglis, Benedict and Meyer. Travis Hallyburton ran 11th, followed by Thayne Hallyburton, Spencer-Walt, Maltese, Fumerton and Adams.

Holdaway got a good restart with Morrow side-by-side with Wilkinson for second, as Shepherd and Gresel went side-by-side for fourth ahead of Goetz and Latimer. Morrow got the second spot on Lap 10, with Shepherd following him through as Shepherd got alongside Morrow for second on Lap 11. Behind them, Goetz got alongside Wilkinson for fourth ahead of Latimer, Benedict and Gresel.

Shepherd got the second spot on Lap 13, with Goetz following him through for third ahead of Morrow. Goetz then got alongside Shepherd for second at Lap 15 ahead of Morrow and Wilkinson as Latimer and Benedict ran side-by-side for sixth. Behind them, Gresel, Thayne Hallyburton and Spencer-Walt went three-wide for eighth at Lap 16. Gresel got the spot ahead of Spencer-Walt, with Spencer-Walt passing Gresel for eighth two laps later.

Latimer was able to clear Benedict for sixth at Lap 19, as Benedict headed down pit road with a mechanical problem. At the same time, the caution flew as Maltese went around. With 17 laps to go, Holdaway led Shepherd, Goetz, Morrow, Wilkinson, Latimer, Spencer-Walt, Gresel, Thayne Hallyburton and Travis Hallyburton. Adams ran 11th, followed by Fumerton, Inglis, Meyer, Benedict and Maltese.

The restart saw a battle for the lead between Shepherd and Goetz ahead of Holdaway as Benedict made his way down pit road. Shepherd cleared Goetz for the top spot at Lap 21, with Holdaway getting alongside Goetz for second. Goetz then cleared Holdaway a lap later with Morrow running fourth ahead of Spencer-Walt, Latimer and Gresel.

Goetz then got back alongside Shepherd for the lead at Lap 24 ahead of Holdaway, Morrow and Spencer-Walt. Morrow then got alongside Holdaway for third at Lap 26 ahead of Spencer-Walt and Latimer, as Gresel and Thayne Hallyburton ran side-by-side for seventh.

Spencer-Walt would then take Holdaway and Morrow three-wide at Lap 28, completing the pass to take the third spot. Though as he completed the pass, the caution flew for Latimer stopping in turns three and four with a problem. With seven laps to go, Shepherd led Goetz, Morrow, Spencer-Walt, Holdaway, Gresel, Thayne Hallyburton, Travis Hallyburton, Wilkinson and Adams. Fumerton ran 11th, followed by Meyer and Inglis.

The restart saw a continuation of the battle for the lead between Shepherd and Goetz, as Spencer-Walt and Morrow went side-by-side for third. Spencer-Walt got the spot with four laps to go ahead of Morrow, Holdaway and Thayne Hallyburton as Travis Hallyburton and Gresel ran side-by-side for seventh.

From the restart to the checkered, the fans were treated to a show with Goetz and Shepherd side-by-side for the top spot. Goetz would clear him with one lap to go, though, with Spencer-Walt trying to sneak in for the runner-up.

Nick Goetz picked up the victory ahead of Gord Shepherd, Rick Spencer-Walt, Chris Morrow and Taylor Holdaway. Thayne Hallyburton finished sixth, followed by Brittney Gresel, Travis Hallyburton, Kendra Adams, and Mike Wilkinson. Ernie Fumerton finished 11th, followed by Mike Meyer, Al Inglis and Paul Maltese.
