For Jake Watson, he’s been racing since the age of eight, beginning in go-karts, before jumping into the mustang at the age of 11. Since then, it appears as though he’s been full throttle ever since.
Now after spending the last couple of seasons at Sunset Speedway, Watson is set to return close to home for the 2017 season. He revealed his team plans to return to Flamboro Speedway this season, set to challenge for the track’s Mini Stock Championship.
“Our goals for 2017 are to get as many checkered flags as possible, along with the championship,” he told Short Track Musings.
Despite some trying times off the track, Watson put together an impressive campaign last year at Sunset Speedway, scoring 11 heat top-five sand 12 feature top-10s throughout the year.
“The 2016 season was definitely an up and down season,” he said. “Only had 1 DNF and finished outside the top 10 a couple of times. Other than that we were a top running car.”
A lot of people began focusing on the No. 88 NORTHERN LACROSSE, SPIRA FIRE PROTECTION, LONDON RECREATIONAL, AC-ACADEMY CONSTRUCTION, PROCESS GROUP, WURTH CANADA, TSS-TOP SHOPS, CLOVERLEAF, FARMS AND DELI, UNIQUE FOODS CANADA, ICELANDIC, AQUAHYDRATE, ACTIVATE, PROTEIN 2O, WIX FILTERS, GUNK PRODUCTS, GLENCOE AUTOMOTIVE, NORTHERN ICE, LUCAS OIL PRODUCTS, ARBODIES, RACE2WAY Mustang in the middle of June when he was able to put together three straight top-five finishes.
“It meant a lot to run up front,” he said. “We didn’t have much speed at the beginning of the year, and our results from June till the end of the season really showed how competitive we are. For 2017 to run upfront it’s going to take a lot of nights in the shop, getting our setup perfect, and being consistent through the race.”
That string of success brought forth a memorable night, as Watson says his second place finish to Warren Paxton on June 11 is his most memorable racing moment to date.
“It sucks I didn’t get the win that day but knowing we had a great car throughout the day meant a lot,” he said.
