With each season that comes up in the Ontario short tracks, there is always a list of drivers that everyone is keeping an eye on with each other division, wondering how they’re going to perform. The Super Stocks are no different, as evident by the success and strength of the Qwick Wick Super Stock Series since launched.
There are a bunch of drivers who are capable of winning, but here are some drivers that are on the radar of people across the province.
As always, be sure to comment with your thoughts – whether positive or negative, and enjoy getting to know these competitors a little more.
Cole Burrows
2022 Ranking: N/A
After a solid season in mini stock competition with heat wins at both Sauble Speedway and Sunset Speedway, Cole Burrows will take the next step in his young career and graduate to the Super Stock division. Set to battle full-time at Sunset, he will hope to lean on the family experience en route to success.
Donovan Price
2022 Ranking: 34th
2023 Thoughts: I’m very excited feels like I have been re energized. With acquiring a new car it has put a fire under my butt and this is the most excited I have been in a long time about racing but I still need to remember to go out and have fun
2023 Plans: To race as much as I can this summer and maybe do a Qwick Wick race or two
2023 Goals: Simple – have fun and try and win races
Drivers to Watch: Myles Tyson, Paul Boundy, Carson Nagy, Connor Maltese, Cody wilds (because he has my old car) lol
After having his season cut short due to an injury outside of the racecar, the times he was able to get behind the wheel still showed Donovan Price’s potential with a trio top-10 appearances at Peterborough Speedway.
2023 Thoughts: Focused directly on showing all my naysayers that I can run with the best of them again. That I’m not just a field filler.
2023 Plans: Fairly tame. Sunset regular season. The invitational at Sauble, as I love running there. And hopefully a trip to Peterborough, and maybe Delaware for a night.
2023 Goals: Simple – to finally get you to take a picture of me with a checkered flag haha. Be the best I can, with the equipment I have.
Drivers to Watch: Johnny Morrison, Nick Tooley, Matt McGrath, Connor Maltese, and of course Dwayne Baker. He’s way overdue! Lol
Making a trio of appearances at Sunset Speedway this past season, Joe Daley proved there’s potential for the future with a pair of top-10 finishes.
Miles Tyson
2022 Ranking: 16th
2023 Thoughts: Just to try and have consistent finishes and bring an competitive car every race and hopefully pull of some wins
2023 Plans: To run a full schedule at Peterborough speedway along with the 5 Qwick Wick Super Stock Series and playoff races
2023 Goals: To be competitive everywhere we go this season and have consistent finishes and hopefully be able to bring home some wins this season
Drivers to Watch: I’d have to say Brandon McFerran will be very competitive this season, Gerrit Tiemersma will be another one, Carson Nagy, Pete Vanderwyst, Jason Parker
Running a limited schedule this past season, Miles Tyson still proved he’s one of the drivers to watch virtue of a top-five in his lone 2022 Qwick Wick Super Stock Series appearance.
2023 Thoughts: Very optimistic entering 2023. We ended 2022 on a high note, and have put in a ton of work so far this winter trying to find even more speed. We’re ready to come out of the gate swinging this year.
2023 Plans: To run Full time at Delaware Speedway and full-time Qwick Wick. Possibly a few extras tossed in between.
2023 Goals: The goal for the Brandy Point team is to find victory lane. The team has a couple Super Stock wins but none myself. Getting our first win together is at the top of our list
Drivers to Watch: That’s always a tough question. The talent level in the Super Stock division is incredibly high, but I’m definitely keeping an eye on Gerrit Tiemersma, Lane Zardo, Jay Doerr, Carson Nagy, and Brody Rickwood.
Running the full Qwick Wick Super Stock Series schedule in 2022, he scored three top-10’s in five races, including a top-five to place seventh in the year-end standings. He also contended for feature victories on a weekly basis at Delaware Speedway, scoring two top-five’s and seven top-10’s in nine races to place seventh.
Nick Tooley
2022 Ranking: 29th
2023 Thoughts: I just want to be better than I was last season, let’s take the season as “one race at a time”
2023 Plans: We had a good season in 2022 after being off for 3 seasons. My goal is to continue that momentum and try to be in a closer points battle.
2023 Goals: To improve on my performances each night, and hopefully get my first feature win.
Drivers to Watch: 1: Gerrit Teimersma hands down. Smooth driver and knows his way around the track. 2: Connor Maltese, came on real strong the last few nights. 3: Lane Zardo. He is always a threat no matter where he goes. 4: Matt McGrath. He has been getting quicker each night and always fun racing side by side with him. 5: Miles Tyson. Any time he jumps into any of his cars, he is always a threat for the win.
Racing weekly at Sunset Speedway, Nick Tooley inched closer to securing his first career feature checkered flag with five top-five’s and nine top-10’s, highlighted by a runner-up on August 27.
Rick Verberne
2022 Ranking: N/A
2023 Thoughts: I am really excited about the ’23 season. I am doing some up grades on our Spark Power Castrol Edge super stock and look forward to getting the season started.
2023 Plans: My plan is to run all 5 Qwick Wick races and some Delaware races. I will be crew chief for DJ Kennington again in the Pinty’s series so we are working on scheduling now.
2023 Goals: To travel around and try and get as many wins as we can!
Drivers to Watch: Ryan Dyson, we have done allot of work upgrading his car over the winter, we have made allot of changes to make the car better! Lane Zardo is always a contender. Trevor Collver will be in the hunt every week. Shawn Chenoweth is always a guy to watch in these cars for sure! Pete Vanderwyst will be defending his title so he’ll be one to watch also!
Running four of the Qwick Wick Super Stock Series events last season, Rick Verberne placed top-10 each time he was on-track, including a top-five appearance. He scored a top-five and pair of top-10’s in two showings at Delaware Speedway.
