Flamboro Speedway’s Frostoberfest Varies in Competitors

MILLGROVE, Ontario — It’s no secret that Flamboro Speedway has put on great shows all across the summer, combining with the crowning of their track champions over the past month.

While the year was full of excitement, there’s an even bigger reason to smile with Frostoberfest set for this Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2. The two-day show packs in a variety of divisions, from the home track usuals to a couple of the top-notch Ontario traveling series.

As everyone talks about what to expect this weekend, and who may end up in victory lane, the list grows long and wide in experience.

The Saturday show will be highlighted by a foursome of touring series with the Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC OSCAAR Modifieds presented by Just Foam It, Qwick Wick OSCAAR Hot Rods, Canadian Legend Car Series, and Ontario Pro Sprints.

Though for the regulars of Flamboro Speedway, you will also have some faces you’re used to with the Mini Stocks set for their 50-lap affair. Mike Thomson hopes to wound up with the igloo after finding his way to victory lane this past season.

“We have been consistent all year with our preparation and results,” Thomson said. “We don’t plan on changing anything for this weekend. Our expectations are to be on the podium standing in the middle. Long races are exactly what we look forward to. We finished top 3 in all the specials this year. Looking forward to racing against the top Mini Stock drivers this weekend at Frostfest. Not going to be easy but up to the challenge!”

Other home track regulars in the field will include Kyle Istead, Tyler Lewis and Kaitlyn Wallace. However, there will also be an invasion from other tracks with Brian Wilson, Thomas Wunsch and Brian Wilson Jr. in attendance from Full Throttle Motor Speedway.

Another fun factor for Saturday will be getting to witness the next generation of racers compete for glory. The Jr Late Models are back for the second year in a row with early entries including Keegan Moat, Del Freiburger, Amber Wallis, Wyatt Sprung, and Cole Kamrath.

In speaking with Cole, he says he’s happy to be heading back to flamboro after a successful season, and starting off the playoffs with a good run at Sunset Speedway’s Fall Velocity. He added that being an LRR driver, he wants more at their hosted race, while adding he’s looking for a top-five run, and keeping the car clean with a quick turnaround for ACC.

The Mini Trucks are also on the card with their early entry list including Kaisha Zimoch, Amy Ellis, and Mason Collver.

“We raced here last Frostoberfest,” Collver said. “It was a really fun and quick track. Looking forward to my second time here; we’re gonna put on a good show with the Mini Trucks and get a win!”

The Sunday show will be highlighted by a 100 lap feature for the Pro Late Models, which promises to have the top drivers from across the province. One of those who is already confirmed is 2022 APC Auto Parts United Late Model Series Champion J.R. Fitzpatrick.

The Super Stocks will also be running a 50 lap feature, with the field set to include the regulars from Flamboro Speedway, as well as drivers who normally compete at Sunset Speedway and Peterborough Speedway. Donovan Price, who saw his season cut back, is ready to get out and support the event.

“Mike (Schmidt of London Recreational Racing) always puts on a good show and I want to go out and support it and have some fun,” he commented. “My season hasn’t been what I had in mind due to a shoulder injury I got during a kickboxing fight that left me on the side lines for a good few months. I know I don’t have the fastest car but this weekend is just about having some fun at one of my favorite tracks.

“There will be lots of guys chasing the famous igloo so it should be some good hard racing as well.”

One of the most diverse classes on the card for Sunday is the Pure Stocks, which shows promise of possibly having a b-main with several drivers confirming their attendance. Several home track regulars have confirmed their attendance, including Eric Stewart. After finding his first trip to victory lane, an igloo would certainly be the icing on the cake for his season.

“From seeing who all have entered via the post, anyone can win,” Stewart shared. “I’ve raced with pretty much everyone on the list and some of them are clean drivers. Should be a great show. Both days are action packed. With Flamboro being basically my home track and LRR being a sponsor of mine, I hope I can go out and do them proud. But like I said, with the talent that said they are coming anyone can win.”

His competition will include Spencer Riddell, who made his return behind the wheel partway through the year with some solid performances.

“I’m excited to race with some of the most talented Pure Stock racers in Southern Ontario,” Riddell commented. “From the track champions to multi-time feature winners, I love to see how I stack up in the mix. With a new car only a couple months old we have gotten a few top-fives already. Goal is to time our way into likely a 40+ car entry list, avoid that B main as much as possible. Think this year is going to be one for the record books!”

The challenge from other tracks in the province will come from Sunset Speedway points runner-up Calvin Reesor, Michael Peterson, as well as multi-time Delaware Speedway feature winner Kris Lawrence. Other Flamboro Speedway regulars include Cameron Thomson, Alex Stewart, Mark Allan, Reuben Fluit, and Mark Thorne.

“Frostoberfest is the race weekend that is always circled on the calendar every year,” Thorne shared. “Mike Schmidt does so much for this event we always  come out to support it. We will have 3 mini stocks there this weekend. My goal is to improve on my 15th place finish last year. I’ll be driving the 46x car again this year. We found a lot of speed with the car this year at Sauble Speedway and I’m hoping it works as well at Flamboro. I’m really looking forward to this weekend.”

Lastly, you cannot ignore the show the Outlaw Midgets are set to put on as this is the lone trip to Flamboro Speedway, and every point will matter as they get ready to crown their series champion the week after.
