INNISFIL, Ontario — With just one finish outside of the top-five all season long, Rick Spencer-Walt was consistent throughout en route to being crowned the 2021 Sunset Speedway Limited Late Model Champion.
“We’re pretty happy with our year and kinda unreal to add another one to make it four in a row,” he commented.
It marks the second straight track title for Spencer-Walt Motorsports at Sunset Speedway, and follows suit with titles at Peterborough Speedway, Sauble Speedway, and in the Great Lakes Concrete Series.
While fans are using to seeing the No. 31w winning features at Sunset, it did not start off that way this season. Instead, the veteran placed fifth and sixth in the first two events of 2021.
“Mid season we found some stuff wrong in the car and McColl’s really helped us get turning through center again,” he explained.
It was the pivotal moment of the season, as Spencer-Walt was unstoppable in the weeks that followed. He scored three straight feature victories, with no finishes worse than second in his qualifying heats.
He then capped it off with a strong run at Fall Velocity, winning his qualifying heat before pacing a majority of the feature en route to a runner-up.
“My favorite moment on the year was burning it down championship night in front of my family, friends, and most of all, my Grandmother – and to top it off being Tammy O Velocity weekend,” he said. “I had a lot on my mind!”
Outside of his own Late Model effort, it was a busy year for the team with Rick’s son Jake Spencer-Walt stepping behind the wheel. He would improve from his first laps on the track at the beginning year to cap off the season with a career-best third at Fall Velocity.
“I think Jake really did a great job out there,” Rick Spencer-Walt commented. “Did he make some mistakes? Sure. Did he ruffle some feathers? Sure! But he raced three times this year and had a big wreck. He has learned a ton, and Danielle and I are so proud of him! Jake makes me a better person and everyone around him; he’s truly a one of a kind kid!”
