INNISFIL, Ontario — After scoring his first top-five of the APC Auto Parts United Late Model Series season, Connor James rolls into this weekend set on keeping the good times rolling.
“I love Sunset,” he told SHORT TRACK MUSINGS. “I still call it my home track even though I’m a Hamilton guy now. Brian and Sandra Todish have done a great deal of work there and they do a lot for the track. I’m very comfortable there and hopefully we can have another decent run.”
James had a solid run at the facility earlier this season, scoring an eighth-place finish. With his sights set on the podium, gaining experience is the secret.
“I just need more experience,” he commented. “We’re finally going back to tracks that we’ve been to already – we’ve got all the first ones out of the way. So just experience. Hopefully we can at least get a podium before the year is over and keep chipping away each and every week.”
As previously mentioned, James scored a fourth-place finish at Flamboro Speedway after making his way through the field over the 100-lap event.
“Each race, we’ve been inching closer and closer with a sixth at Sunset and Sauble,” he commented. “We just need to qualify better so we can finish up there more often. I just can’t thank Taylor Holdaway enough. Just really happy that we finished in the top-five tonight.”
He admits coming through the field can be tough sledding, noting the team is also focused on improving their qualifying efforts.
“We made some passes, but some of it was attrition as we made up spots under caution this race, but we did a lot of passing under green flag. It’s just really hard,” he commented. “We’ve always had a good car on the long run and I think that’s what we’ve aimed for in the last few races. But going forward, it’d be nice to qualify up there and give us an easier race.”
