As we wind down the year in celebrating the 30th Anniversary of OSCAAR competition, it seems only fitting to take a final glance back at some of the most memorable moments. So here are five that stand out in relation to the Knightworks Design OSCAAR Hot Rods.
Race No. 1
The dream and vision of the select committee that formed what we know as the OSCAAR Hot Rods today saw their first event take place at Kawartha Speedway in June 2017.
Seven cars appeared at the Fraiserville, Ontario oval in hopes of making ‘ol school cool a reality, with OSCAAR Super Late Model veteran Tyler Hawn and Kawartha Mini Stock stand-out Daryl Fice taking the heat victories. Fice also led through the early laps of the feature, but Hawn was able to make his way by just past halfway to lay claim on the inaugural victory.
Since then, each of those competitors involved in the inaugural event have come back to run several more since, including the runner-up that day, Adam Misener
Race No. 25
It took a couple years, with a couple hurtles along the way, but the Hot Rods proved they were here to stay with completing their 25th race on August 24 at Flamboro Speedway.
One of the most unique and memorable builds the series has seen went to victory lane that day, with Rodney Rutherford capturing the checkered flag in his 1961 Chevrolet Biscayne. Unfortunately, a mega incident just a couple weeks later at Jukasa Motor Speedway saw the car sustain serious damage, ending its foray with the series.
While Mike Westwood has been busy on other contributions to OSCAAR since, it’d be certainly be interesting to hear whether a new Biscane is in the works for the future.
The Hot Rods have gotten the unique opportunity to add their own chapters to the OSCAAR history books, including the series’ first foray on dirt. The inaugural event was part of the schedule in 2017, taking place at Brighton Speedway mid-July.
Hawn proved his worth within the series once again, taking the victory despite lacking dirt experience in his own right. He did not go unchallenged, as both Steve Mayhew and Art Rodgers utilized what they learned with their experience to try and chase the Beaumont down, but were unable to.
For any driver to partake in the Autumn Colours Classic weekend, it marks a special weekend with the history and prestige buried into that event. The competitors in the Hot Rods got their chance to be part of that in 2019, with their inaugural appearance.
They made the most of it, with the battle up front between Steve Book and Hawn remaining close from the drop of the green flag. Despite catching lap traffic, they did not let each other out of their sights, with Hawn trying to utilize every opportunity he could to capture the lead. He was unable to, though, as Book drove to victory lane.
Although Book has yet to capture a championship, he’s certainly left an impression on the division with five trips to feature victory lane, and boasting the longest consecutive top-10 streak in the series with 25 in a row. He’s also caught the fans’ attention with his unique Studebaker Hawk body.
The Undisputed King
Since the first event for the series to his top-five in the 2020 finale at Jukasa Motor Speedway, Tyler Hawn has proved to be the man to beat thus far in the Hot Rods.
It is no surprise that he has earned three championships, coming in a row from 2017 to 2019. He currently tops the all-time win list with nine victories, along with 23 top-five’s and 30 top-10’s.
The only question that remains is whether the dominance can be maintained going into 2021 and beyond as the competition continues to build their notebooks and get stronger.
