INNISFIL, Ontario — Despite a rough start to the night, Robbie Sikes persevered for a season-best performance in the 75-lap feature on Saturday at Sunset Speedway.
The qualifying heats would not go smoothly for Sikes, as he’d be spun on the second lap of the first heat, followed by contact causing front end damage on the eighth lap. The Spencer-Walt Motorsports crew made the necessary repairs ahead of the second qualifying heat, only for Sikes to be spun on Lap 3. He’d be fight back during that qualifier to finish third.
Starting ninth for the 75-lap feature, he’d remain there through the early stages, battling side-by-side with Ernie Fumerton. He’d hold off the challenge for the spot initially, though faded back to 10th in the next couple of laps. Unfortunately, he’d continue to fall back, running 11th as of the 37th lap, remaining there until the race’s first caution at Lap 46. Under the yellow flag, he’d come down pit road, receiving a couple adjustments from the crew.
Restarting 13th, he’d make his way forward on the restart to battle inside the top-10 for positions, running eighth as of the race’s second caution on Lap 69 for a car going around. He’d avoid the chaos on the restart up front, followed by battling hard through the final six laps of the event en route to a seventh-place finish.
The result is a great cap to a solid rookie campaign that saw Sikes score nine top-10’s throughout the season.
