INNISFIL, Ontario — Despite facing adversity, Spencer-Walt Motorsports powered through to score a top-five finish on Saturday night at Sunset Speedway.
Rick Spencer-Walt started off the night by laying down a lap of 14.932 seconds in time trials to qualify sixth for the first 35-lap feature. He would battle for fifth in the early stages, taking the spot on the fifth lap. He would look to continue moving forward, when contact from behind caused him to go around in turn four on Lap 10.
Restarting from the tail of the field, an incident happened ahead of him two laps after the restart, with Spencer-Walt once again going around in the process. Set to restart 14th, the No. 31w Late Model would quit running as the field came to the green flag. Spencer-Walt would head down pit road to the attention of his pit crew, but they were unable to get the car restarted. As a result, he would be credited with a 15th-place finish.
Once back in the pit area, the Spencer-Walt Motorsports team went to work, making the necessary repairs needed to get the No. 31w back up and running for the second feature.
Starting 16th in the second feature, he would move up to ninth by the first caution at Lap 8. Restarting on the inside of the fifth row, he would make his way up to sixth on the restart, remaining there until the caution came out on Lap 12 for a car stalled in turn two. Restarting on the outside of the third row, he’d avoid the contact ahead of him to move up to third over the next two caution flags.
Restarting on the second row, he would battle side-by-side with Kendra Adams for the third position over the course of the final laps, finally clearing her with six laps to go. He then held off a late-race charge from Gord Shepherd in the last two laps to cross the finish line in third.
To date, with 18 features now in the books for the 2019 campaign, Spencer-Walt has scored five wins, six runner-ups, three thirds, a pair of fourths, and a seventh. As a result, he currently leads the track division standings.
He is also currently leading the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I Provincial Standings, and is 14th in the national standings (despite some United States competitors having ran twice the amount of features), just 12 points out of the top-10. Notably, he is the highest ranked Canadian in the standings.
Spencer-Walt will be back in action on Saturday, September 14 for the final night of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I points competition at Sunset Speedway.
