INNISFIL, Ontario — Despite going around for a spin at the beginning of the feature, Luke Gignac rebounded for a top-five finish on Saturday night at Sunset Speedway.
Gignac was solid in his first heat, scoring a sixth-place finish to qualify 11th for the 50-lap feature.
Right off the drop of the green flag, things went affray with Gignac going around in turn four. There would be no caution, with Gignac getting the No. 99 Modified righted the right away and continuing on. He would be able to catch back up to the field when the first caution flew at Lap 6, cracking the top-10 on Lap 10. He would continue to move forward, moving up into eighth before the second caution at Lap 18.
Restarting on the outside of row four, he would jump up seventh. He would then avoid an incident ahead of him at the halfway mark to move up into fifth. Restarting on the inside of row three, he’d solidly hold his ground despite being challenged, with the caution coming out on Lap 34 for a spin in turn four.
With lightning occurring off of the backstretch and a storm ready to move in, the event was called at this point. Due to over half of the 50 laps being complete, the race is deemed official with full points being counted. Gignac was credited with a fifth-place finish.
Gignac will be back in action at Flamboro Speedway on Saturday, July 27 for the next round of Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC OSCAAR Modified competition. Gignac currently sits fourth in the standings, 11 points behind third.
