Rick Spencer-Walt Picks Up Pair of Runner-ups on Opening Night at Sunset Speedway

INNISFIL, Ontario — Running up front throughout both twin 35-lap features at Sunset Speedway, Rick Spencer-Walt scored a pair of runner-up finishes on Saturday night.

The 2018 Sauble Speedway Champion started off the night by posting a quick lap of 14.668 seconds in time trials to qualify fourth for the first 35-lap feature. He immediately moved into third on the drop of the green flag, challenging for second before falling in line behind Nick Goetz. He remained there until he was able to use a late race restart to his advantage, getting by Goetz to finish the race in the runner-up spot.

Starting ninth for the second 35-lap feature, he got through the first couple of cautions cleanly, moving up to eighth. Once the race found it’s rhythm, he moved into seventh, challenging Josh Stade for sixth at Lap 9. Unable to complete the pass, he fell back in line. He would remain there until the race’s third caution with 23 laps to go for an incident behind him.

Restarting seventh, he would begin to move forward quickly, getting alongside Paul Geniole Jr. for fourth. Geniole would drive hard into turn three on Lap 18 trying to stay alongside Spencer-Walt, causing the car to snap loose and go around for the fourth caution.

With Spencer-Walt restarting fourth, he once again moved forward quickly, getting alongside Travis Hallyburton for second. Nick Goetz then took the pair of them four-wide, with both of them getting Hallyburton, as Spencer-Walt fell in line behind Goetz in third. The pair remained that way, beginning to close the gap to race leader Ron Quesnelle.

With Goetz alongside Quesnelle for the lead, Spencer-Walt would take them three-wide on Lap 31. The move would work into his favor, as he was able to take the lead with three laps to go. He then begin working at holding the track position ahead of Goetz, not allowing him to get a run on the bottom. As he did so, though, it left the top lane open for Dwayne Baker, who was able to pass Goetz, and get alongside Spencer-Walt off of turn four on the last lap.

It would be close at the checkered flag, with Spencer-Walt coming up short on the victory by 0.099 seconds.

Spencer-Walt Motorsports will be back at Sunset Speedway on Sunday, May 19 for the next NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I event, the Spring Velocity 75-lap feature. It is worth noting that Spencer-Walt is the defending race winner.
