Dwayne Baker Scores Late Model Feature Victory at Sunset

Leading the field to the green flag, Dwayne Baker didn’t give up the top spot through the whole Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park Late Model feature on Saturday night at Sunset Speedway.

As noted, Dwayne Baker started pole ahead of Chris McIssac, Nic Montanari, Mike Wilkinson, Billy Zardo, Ron Quesnelle, Ernie Fumerton, Paul Maltese, Al Inglis, Gord Shepherd, Danny Benedict, Nick Goetz, and Chris Alderdice.

Baker would grab the lead off the drop of the green flag with Wilkinson alongside McIssac for second. Wilkinson got the spot on Lap 2, bringing Montanari and Zardo through with him. Inglis and Quesnelle were set to be the next pair to pass McIssac, but contact while three-wide saw Quesnelle slightly climb Inglis, bringing out the yellow flag. With 32 laps to go, Baker led Wilkinson, Zardo, Montanari, Quesnelle, Fumerton, Shepherd, Benedict, Maltese, Goetz, Inglis, Alderdice, McIssac, and Inglis.

The first attempt at a restart brought the yellow flag back out for the second caution for debris in turn four. The second attempt went cleanly, with Baker leading ahead of Wilkinson and Zardo as Quesnelle and Montanari battled for fourth. Quesnelle got the spot on Lap 6, bringing Shepherd through with him. Quesnelle then got alongside Zardo for third, completing the pass on Lap 8, with Shepherd and Benedict following him through.

Goetz would be the next get alongside Zardo on Lap 10, now for sixth, as Montanari and Fumerton battled for eighth ahead of Maltese. Goetz got the spot on Lap 12, with Fumerton passing Montanari a lap later. Inglis would get alongside Maltese for eighth with 22 laps to go ahead of McIssac and Alderdice.

There’d be battles around the track with Shepherd getting alongside Quesnelle for third on Lap 16, as Benedict and Goetz battled for fifth. Goetz got the spot on Lap 19 ahead of Benedict, Zardo, Fumerton, Montanari, Inglis, Maltese and McIssac. Fumerton would get alongside Zardo for sixth at Lap 22, but the caution came out for McIssac going around for the spin in turn two.

Baker got a good restart ahead of Wilkinson with Quesnelle and Shepherd side-by-side for third, as Benedict and Goetz battled for fifth. Goetz got the spot on Lap 25 ahead of Benedict, Fumerton, Zardo, Montanari, Maltese, Inglis, and McIssac. Shepherd would clear Quesnelle with eight laps to go, with Goetz challenging Quesnelle for fourth.

Goetz easily got the spot, challenging Shepherd for third with four laps to go. Goetz got the spot, with Quesnelle following him through a lap later as Benedict got alongside on the last lap.

Dwayne Baker picked up the win ahead of Mike Wilkinson, Nick Goetz, Ron Quesnelle, Danny Benedict, Gord Shepherd, Ernie Fumerton, Billy Zardo, Paul Maltese, Al Inglis, and Chris McIssac as Nic Montanari went around in turn four on the last lap.
