INNISFIL, Ont. — Returning back to Sunset Speedway on Saturday night, Rick Spencer-Walt scored a pair of runner-ups.
Qualifying second with a lap of 14.672 seconds, Spencer-Walt battled side-by-side with eventual feature winner Nick Goetz through the opening five laps, before falling in line in second. He’d remain there until the first caution at Lap 10.
Restarting second, he remained in there through the rest of the feature, scoring a runner-up finish.
With the invert setting him up to start 11th in the second feature, he began to make his way forward, running sixth as of Lap 6. He then looked to continue moving forward, getting alongside Ron Quesnelle for fifth. He was unable to complete the pass, though, falling back in line as they passed a lap car. The progress was halted there as he tried a couple times, eventually moving up to fifth when he got by Kendra Adams at Lap 12.
Inside of the top-five, he’d get alongside Ron Quesnelle for fourth, completing the pass to challenge Al Inglis for third at Lap 18. He snagged the spot on Lap 20, getting alongside Paul Maltese for second a lap later. He would then move into the position with 13 laps to go.
As the race drew on, he worked at closing the gap to eventual race winner Gord Shepherd, but was not able to catch him through the back half of the event. As a result, Spencer-Walt crossed the finish line with another second-place finish.
Spencer-Walt’s next event will be the third round of the Great Lakes Concrete Series, which takes place on Thursday, July 12 at Sauble Speedway. He won the first two events (Spring Velocity at Sunset, Canada Day Special at Sauble) to hold the points lead heading into this event.
