Although it was a shortened season for the OSCAAR Midgets, the champion was made clear based on his immediate success on track.
Brent Kemps was a driver that everyone knew they had to keep an eye on come 2017, due to how first OSCAAR Midget start a year prior. He debuted in the 2016 season finale, Frostoberfest at Flamboro Speedway, and immediately took to the midget racecar. He was fast throughout qualifying and the race, ultimately placing second to Owen Elliott.
Although he missed the season opener in 2017, he was still a driver kept on everybody’s radars as anticipation built for his first start of the new year. He made it out for the second event of the season in June at Flamboro Speedway, once again showing speed as he had done before. He challenged for the victory throughout the duration of the event, ultimately coming up just shy again with a runner-up finish.
Going to a different venue would be the magic ticket to finally breaking through to victory lane, with a summer trip to the beach. Taking to Sauble Speedway at the beginning of July, there was no stopping him in either of the pair of features. He was quickest car all day long, putting down solid laps in both events en route to two victories to take home.
With no finishes worse than second in his career, Kemps was crowned the 2017 OSCAAR Midget Champion.
On behalf of OSCAAR, congratulations to Brent Kemps on a successful campaign. We look forward to seeing you back out in 2018, possibly with the Pro Midgets.
