Ryan Semple finished the year the same way he started it – solidly running up front, scoring another heat victory and top-five on Saturday night at Sunset Speedway.
He was quick from the drop of the green flag on Saturday night, scoring his 14th heat victory of the season in the first qualifier, followed by a third in the second round.
Starting 11th for the 30-lap feature, he would be right in the middle of chaos with battles and contact happening at every turn. Semple found himself involved in one of those, as a battle for position three-wide with two others, saw the car on the outside get into the frontstretch wall, drawing the first caution on Lap 3. However, with all three drivers continuing without issue, it was dubbed no harm or foul as everyone got to keep their spots.
Restarting 12th, he made his way with a couple passes before the next caution flew at Lap 11. With some drivers electing to come down pit road for adjustments or cosmetic repairs, it would bump Semple up to seventh. Now inside the top-10, he got a good restart to crack the top-five, passing Dustyn Mombourquette at the halfway mark to move into fourth. He kept right with the front runners, making the pass on Brandon Passer with 12 laps to go to move into third. With a small gap between him and the top-two, he was unable to close the gap – but got a chance to go for the win when the caution flew for debris with five laps to go.
Restarting fifth, the pair of leaders remained side-by-side through the final laps, and despite looking three-wide a couple of times, he was unable to make the move, crossing the finish line in third.
Looking back on 2017, it was an impressive season for Semple, as he scored 11 top-five’s in 17 races, including a victory mid-summer, en route to placing second in the points standings.
