BRIGHTON, Ont. – August 28, 2017 – Phil Potts got back to Victory Lane for the second time this season with the Go Nuclear Late Model Series with an impressive charge through the field on Friday
night at Ohsweken Speedway. Potts drove from the eighth starting spot to claim his first career win at Ohsweken and second with the Go Nuclear Series.
“It’s tremendous. We’re still on a high, our whole team is,” Potts said following his win. “We didn’t expect an outcome this good tonight. I always hope to take a top-five home, but in the heat race when we started fourth and we won it and then when I redrew eighth in the Feature, we were in third within five laps so I knew we had a good car. I was really good in the middle and low. The car was fast and I drove the wheels right off it. Without my guys, I wouldn’t be here tonight.”
A rain delay with five laps complete threw a wrench into the plans of most teams, but the extra tack the rain provided the racing surface didn’t affect the handling on Potts’ Vanderlaan Building Products/Brighton Recycling No.29.
“After the rain, the track had more bite and that’s what worried me. We had adjusted for a slick track, but I wasn’t sure what it was going to do, so I ran with it,” Potts said. “The car was really good. It was a little bit tight coming off the corner because there was so much forward drive, so I just let it run for the wall and it worked well. I had so much bite leaving the corners that it was easy to drive. I could actually slow down, back by corner up, get back on the throttle and it just worked well.”
It turned out Potts had a decided advantage with his tire selection. He drove from the eighth starting spot to the lead on lap 11 of the 20-lap Feature. Potts felt his decision to run the harder tire option was to his benefit.
“We were on hard tires and a lot of other guys were on soft tires,” Potts said. “The softs don’t work for me because I burn them off. I torture my poor car, always have, always do. As the race went on, my hard tires came in better and better. I always need green flags and tonight we got enough to pull it off.”
The win was a big morale boost for Potts after a wreck at Humberstone Speedway a week ago Sunday. Now, Potts and his team feel even more confident entering the stretch drive and major year-end events.
It’s huge. It’s a confidence builder, so it’s good for the crew and its good for me,” Potts said of the win. “I had a car I didn’t have to fight. We’ve been trying to figure out why I’ve had to fight the car. Sunday night we smashed the car up at Humberstone, put it back together and it’s like its brand new. I’m not sure, but maybe you have to bang them up once and a while to make them work again.”
Potts followed his victory with a fourth-place finish at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night. He’ll return to action at Brighton during the Labour Day Classic weekend with a Topless Late Model race on Sunday, September 3. For additional event information, visit www.brightonspeedway.ca.
