Hawn Motorsports Makes History: Tyler and Daniel Hawn Each Win Pole for Autumn Colours Classic

ORO STATION, Ont. – August 8, 2017 – Tyler Hawn turned in his best OSCAAR Super Late Model performance of the season at the most important time last Saturday night. The Oro Station, Ont. driver piloted his Fox’s Bakery No.2h Super Late Model to a pair of second-place finishes in twin 35-lap OSCAAR Super Late Model features at Peterborough Speedway’s Chase for the Colours pole qualifier.

The two runner-up finishes made Hawn the overall winner of the event and won him the pole for the prestigious 25th annual Autumn Colours Classic at Peterborough on October 6-8. Hawn’s younger brother, Daniel Hawn, won the OSCAAR Midget Feature on the night and earned the pole starting position for that division at Autumn Colours. The Hawn brothers became the first siblings in the history of the event to earn pole starting positions in the same year.

“It’s hard to grasp what we’ve done,” Tyler said. “For us two as brothers, for the first time in history, to start on the pole for Autumn Colours, it’s just unreal.”

The win comes during a tough time for the family as Hawn Motorsports patriarch Don Hawn remains in hospital fighting pneumonia. He has been sedated and unconscious for the past few weeks.

“We’ve had to go to the races before without Dad because he’s been sick or he’s hurt his knee, but we’ve been able to talk to him,” Hawn said. “The last two races we haven’t been able to talk to him and it’s been one of the hardest things we’ve ever had to deal with it. My dad is the reason we are who we are. He’s our biggest support system. When you can’t talk to him about what’s going on, it’s almost impossible.”

Yet, Don Hawn was still with his two sons, Tyler and Daniel, throughout the night on the way to their respective successes.

“There was some stuff we talked about with dad before everything happened that he wanted to change on the Super and with Daniel’s Midget,” Tyler explained. “We were hesitant to do it, but we just decided to go with it. We got a little bit of help from Glenn Watson and out buddy Rob Hoskins and everything all put together, it just seemed to work.”

The pair of trophies from Saturday’s races now rest in Don Hawn’s hospital room as his sons anxiously await celebrating with their father, a multi-time stock car champion in his own right.

“I can’t wait for the moment I can tell dad,” Tyler said happily. “The reason we race is for him and I can’t wait for him to see that trophy.”

Hawn has several races on his schedule before he can take advantage of his pole starting position at Autumn Colours. Hawn will continue to revel in the excitement for a few more days, but won’t let it cloud his focus when the race rolls around come Thanksgiving weekend in October.

“We’re just going to go into Autumn Colours with the goal of keeping our equipment in one piece,” Hawn said. “Obviously we’re going to fight for the win, but we’re pretty close in points. The strategy doesn’t really change. We have to keep our focus and not let ourselves get too excited.”

The Hawn Motorsports team is taking a race by race approach to the remainder of the season while Mr. Don Hawn continues to recover in hospital. He will, however, next be in action at Flamboro Speedway on Monday, August 21 for the Gold Rush 100 after receiving tire sponsorship from Sean Grosman, Ryan Kimball, Lynn Tomkins, Randy Temple and Graham Annis.
