In one of the best side-by-side battles this season to date, Gord Shepherd out-dueled Nick Goetz to score the Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park Late Model feature victory on Saturday night at Sunset Speedway.
Jo Lawrence initially posted the quickest time in qualifying at 15.047 seconds, but was DQ’d in tech inspection.
As a result, Nick Goetz would get the pole at 15.058 seconds ahead of Gord Shepherd, Danny Benedict, Ron Quesnelle, and Travis Hallyburton. Thayne Hallyburton qualified sixth ahead of Rick Spencer-Walt, Mike Wilkinson, Chris Morrow, and Billy Zardo. Ernie Fumerton qualified 11th, followed by Taylor Holdaway, Jordan Latimer, Brittney Gresel, Kendra Adams, Paul Maltese, Al Inglis, Lane Zardo and Jo Lawrence.
The drop of the green flag saw Goetz and Shepherd battle for the top spot, with Quesnelle and Benedict side-by-side for third on Lap 3 as Lawrence headed down pit road. Benedict got the spot on Lap 4, bringing Travis Hallyburton through with him to bump Quesnelle back to fifth. Behind them, Rick Spencer-Walt got Thayne Hallyburton for sixth, getting alongside Quesnelle for fifth at Lap 6.
Spencer-Walt took the spot two laps later, with Thayne Hallyburton getting alongside Quesnelle for sixth. Behind them, Morrow ran eighth ahead of Wilkinson, Holdaway and Latimer. Holdaway got alongside Wilkinson for ninth on Lap 10, with Quesnelle clearing Hallyburton for sixth a lap later.
At the front of the field, Goetz would clear Shepherd for the top spot on Lap 12 as both Zardo brothers headed down pit road with problems. The caution then flew a lap later, though, as Maltese went around. With 23 laps to go, Goetz led Shepherd, Benedict, Travis Hallyburton, Spencer-Walt, Quesnelle, Thayne Hallyburton, Morrow, Holdaway, Wilkinson and Latimer.
The restart saw a continuation of the battle for the lead between Shepherd and Goetz, with Shepherd clearing Goetz ahead of Travis Hallyburton on Lap 14. Goetz then got back alongside Shepherd a lap later with Benedict now fourth ahead of Spencer-Walt. The caution then flew, though, as a result of Maltese and Adams tangling in turn two.
The restart saw a continuation of the battle for the lead between Shepherd and Goetz ahead of Benedict and Travis Hallyburton. Behind them, Spencer-Walt and Quesnelle went side-by-side for fifth ahead of Morrow, Thayne Hallyburton and Holdaway. Spencer-Walt got the spot on Lap 19, as Travis got alongside Benedict for third. The caution then flew on Lap 20, though, for Maltese spinning in turn two.
Shepherd got a good restart to clear Goetz for the lead with Travis Hallyburton moving into third ahead of Benedict, Spencer-Walt and Quesnelle. Spencer-Walt then got alongside Benedict for fourth on Lap 22 ahead of Quesnelle, as Morrow and Thayne Hallyburton ran side-by-side for seventh. Morrow got the spot on Lap 24 ahead of Thayne, with Holdaway rounding out the top-nine.
Goetz would then get back alongside Shepherd for the top spot on Lap 25 ahead of Travis Hallyburton, Spencer-Walt, Benedict, Quesnelle, Morrow, Holdaway, Thayne Hallyburton and Wilkinson. Thayne would then slow with a problem on Lap 28, allowing Wilkinson to move up to ninth ahead of Gresel.
Shepherd would clear Goetz for the top spot with six laps to go ahead of Goetz, Travis Hallyburton, Spencer-Walt and Benedict as Thayne Hallyburton headed down pit road on Lap 30. Quesnelle continued to run sixth ahead of Holdaway, Morrow, Wilkinson, Gresel and Fumerton. Holdaway then got alongside Quesnelle for sixth with two laps to go, completing the pass a lap later.
Gord Shepherd picked up the victory ahead of Nick Goetz, Travis Hallyburton, Rick Spencer-Walt and Danny Benedict. Taylor Holdaway finished sixth, followed by Ron Quesnelle, Chris Morrow, Mike Wilkinson, and Brittney Gresel.
