Nick Goetz Scores First Feature Victory of Season at Sunset Speedway

Taking the lead just past halfway, Nick Goetz led the rest of the way en route to scoring his first Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park Late Model feature victory of 2017.

Taylor Holdaway took the pole position, with the time unannounced as a result of transponder issues. Mike Bentley qualified second at 14.962 seconds, followed by Travis Hallyburton (19.963), Nick Goetz (14.995), and Gord Shepherd (14.996). Thayne Hallyburton qualified sixth, followed by Billy Zardo, Jordan Latimer, Chris Morrow, and Paul Maltese. Ernie Fumerton qualified 11th, followed by Lane Zardo, Ron Quesnelle, Mike Wilkinson, Rick Spencer-Walt, Kendra Adams, Al Inglis, Brittney Gresel, and Mike Meyer.

Off the drop of the green flag, Holdaway grabbed the early advantage with Bentley and Travis Hallyburton side-by-side for second ahead of Goetz and Thayne Hallyburton. Travis got the spot on Lap 4, bringing Goetz through with him. Bentley now ran fourth ahead of Thayne, as Morrow and Shepherd ran side-by-side for sixth.

Shepherd got the spot on Lap 8, with Goetz passing Travis for second on Lap 9 before the caution flew for Fumerton spinning in turn two, courtesy of contact with Spencer-Walt. With 27 laps to go, Holdaway led Goetz, Travis Hallyburton, Bentley, Thayne Hallyburton, Shepherd, Morrow, Maltese, Latimer, Billy Zardo, Wilkinson, Quesnelle, Inglis, Gresel, Adams, Meyer, Spencer-Walt and Fumerton.

Holdaway got a good restart to keep the lead ahead of Travis Hallyburton and Goetz as Bentley and Shepherd ran side-by-side for fourth. Goetz then got alongside Hallyburton for second, completing the pass on Lap 13 as Shepherd grabbed fourth ahead of Bentley and Maltese.

Behind them, Thayne Hallyburton and Morrow ran side-by-side for seventh, with Morrow getting the spot on Lap 15. Hallyburton now ran eighth ahead of Billy Zardo, Latimer and Lane Zardo. The caution then flew on Lap 16, though, for Meyer spinning in turn two. With 19 laps to go, Holdaway led Goetz, Shepherd, Travis Hallyburton, Holdaway, Maltese, Morrow, Thayne Hallyburton, Billy Zardo, Latimer, Lane Zardo, Wilkinson, Quesnelle, Gresel, Spencer-Walt, Inglis, Fumerton and Meyer.

The first attempt to restart the race resulted in a caution as Holdaway jumped.

The second restart was clean, with Goetz putting the No. 24 Late Model out front on Lap 18 ahead of Holdaway, with Shepherd third ahead of Travis Hallyburton, Maltese, Morrow, Bentley, Thayne Hallyburton and Billy Zardo. The fourth caution then flew on Lap 21 for Fumerton going around in turns one and two. With 15 laps to go, Wilkinson ran 10th ahead of Latimer, Lane Zardo, Gresel, Quesnelle, Spencer-Walt, Meyer, Inglis and Fumerton.

Goetz got a good restart to keep the lead ahead of Holdaway, Shepherd, Travis Hallyburton and Morrow. Maltese ran sixth ahead of Thayne Hallyburton and Bentley, as Latimer and Billy Zardo ran side-by-side for ninth ahead of Wilkinson, Gresel and Spencer-Walt. The caution then flew, though, as a result of Inglis going around in turn two.

Goetz kept the good restarts coming, staying in front of Holdaway as Shepherd and Travis Hallyburton ran side-by-side for third ahead of Morrow and Maltese. The battle was short lived, with the sixth caution flying for Meyer spinning Inglis in turn four on Lap 26. With 10 laps to go, Goetz led Holdaway, Shepherd, Travis Hallyburton, Morrow, Maltese, Bentley, Thayne Hallyburton, Billy Zardo, Latimer, Gresel, Spencer-Walt, Wilkinson, Quesnelle, Lane Zardo, Fumerton, Adams, Inglis and Meyer.

Goetz got another good restart ahead of Holdaway, with Travis Hallyburton and Shepherd side-by-side once again for third. Shepherd got the spot on Lap 28 ahead of Travis, with Morrow rounding out the top-five. Behind them, Maltese and Bentley ran side-by-side for sixth as the caution flew on Lap 29 for Lane Zardo stopping with a mechanical issue. With seven laps to go, Goetz led Holdaway, Shepherd, Travis Hallyburton, Morrow, Maltese, Bentley, Thayne Hallyburton, Latimer, Billy Zardo, Spencer-Walt, Gresel, Quesnelle, Wilkinson, Fumerton, Inglis, Adams and Meyer.

Goetz got another good restart, with Shepherd getting alongside Holdaway for second, as Morrow and Travis Hallyburton ran side-by-side for fourth. Maltese ran sixth with three laps to go ahead of Bentley, with Latimer alongside Thayne Hallyburton for eighth.
