Paul Maltese Endures Rough Night at Sunset Speedway

After showing speed and promise throughout pre-season testing, opening night at Sunset Speedway did not go as Maltese Motorsports had planned with incidents in both 35-lap features on Saturday night.

The veteran started off the night by laying down a 15.254 second lap in time trials to qualify 14th for the first feature. Maltese looked set to gain some ground in the early stages, but instead found himself turned around on Lap 20 as a result of contact. Restarting at the tail of the field, he was unable to make up much ground en route to an 18th-place finish.

Starting deep in the field for the second feature, Maltese escaped the Lap 3 multi-car incident without any damage, gaining some ground, and eventually cracking the top-10 with 21 laps to go. He’d continue to run 10th all the way till he and Rick Spencer-Walt made contact with two laps to go. Being deemed an involved car, he’d be sent to the back for the restart and was unable to make up much ground before the checkered flag flew.

Maltese will be back at Sunset Speedway on May 6 in hopes of turning the early season bad luck around. The team knows they have what it takes after posting a pair of top-fives and 11 top-10s last year en route to finishing seventh in points.

Maltese and team are proud to be supported by Presto Appliance Repair, Delmeade Construction, Paragon Office Installations, Leitch Performance . Blue Sky Contracting and Landscape, Ontario Steel Sales, Essies Poultry Farms, Auto Trim Design, and OAS.
