Picton racer begins 2017 season with Quebec doubleheader
PICTON, Ont. – May 2, 2017 – The 2017 season will jump into high gear quickly for Dan Ferguson. The Picton, Ont. native is trying something new for the upcoming season as he will compete in a DIRTcar Sportsman Modified.
Ferguson will start his foray into DIRTcar Sportsman competition with a pair of races at Quebec tracks this weekend. He’ll visit LeRPM Speedway in Saint-Marcel-de-Richelieu, QC on Friday, May 5 before tackling Autodrome Drummond in Drummondville, QC on Saturday, May 6 in the opening race of the DIRTcar Sportsman Series Northern Region.
Ferguson, a multi-time track champion at Brighton, will not compete for points at any track or with any series. Instead, he’s taking the opportunity to experience new tracks.
“We’re just going to go and have fun and make a weekend out of racing,” Ferguson said. “Going to different racetracks, trying different things and racing against different people every week is fun. There’s no pressure, no expectations. Most of these tracks we’re going to, I’ve never even seen before. It’s a whole new ball game for us.”
While he won’t be at Brighton Speedway every week this season, Ferguson still plans to race in the track’s Canadian Modified division on a part-time basis. He intends to race the division’s Triple Crown series as well as other select events.
“I think the biggest challenge for me is going to be not going to Brighton every week,” Ferguson said. “When it’s been your life for 30 years, it’s hard to not go back there, but I’m excited to do what we’re going to do.”
Ferguson dabbled in DIRTcar Sportsman racing last season to get his feet wet in the ultra-competitive division. Both his Canadian Modified and Sportsman cars are open-wheel, but the similarities stop there. The DIRTcar Sportsman Modified is a centre-steer car with a very different feel.
“To me, the Sportsman drives a little bit easier than the Modified does at Brighton,” Ferguson said. “The Sportsman is a lot simpler of a setup than the Canadian Modified is, but momentum is more important in the Sportsman.”
The DIRTcar Sportsman division has become one of the most competitive classes of dirt racing in Ontario, Quebec and the northeastern United States. It’s an affordable, purpose-built racecar that brings an exciting mix of young stars and seasoned veterans to create a tough field of racers. DIRTcar Sportsman Series races on both sides of the border often attract upwards of 60 or 70 cars.
“It’s such a high caliber of driver in the Sportsman class and especially when you’re going to a series race, so you have a lot of top guys that are there. I think that will make me a little bit better of a driver by racing against those guys,” Ferguson said.
“At the end of the day, I’m a race fan as much as I am a driver. When you’re racing against these guys, you’re kind of like ‘holy, this is neat’.”
Without any concern for points to force a conservative driving style, Ferguson will be eager to earn a checkered flag every time he hits the track.
“I’m really excited to get going. I really want to go do this,” Ferguson said. “I love the fact of showing up and driving the wheels off the car. I like to know that we go to these other tracks and just drive your hardest. You’re going for the win every night.”
