After a successful campaign last year, SKLD Motorsports will be back at Sunset Speedway once again this season, taking part in the heavily stacked Mini Stock division.
“I’m hoping to have a top-10 car all year long,” Doug Wilman told Short Track Musings. “It’s going to be a hard season. There’s some really good competitors in it, but hopefully what we’re doing to the car will improve it. Basically, my goal this year is try and keep the nose of the car clean and bring her to the front.”
Last year, Wilman put together an impressive campaign in the Mighty Mini Division, finishing second in the division standings with 14 heat top-fives and 11 feature top-10s across the year.
“It was a good season,” he said. “The car was going in the right direction, and this year hopefully it’s a bit more of an improvement.”
The icing on the cake for the year was certainly seeing the No. 14 Acura visit victory lane for the first time with a heat victory early in the year, which Wilman calls “a great achievement.” Of course, another big highlight for the year which Wilman calls the most memorable was capping off the season with a second place finish in the feature on Championship Night.
With some seasons in the books, it was refreshing to see the success and pieces come together this year, thus showing the hard work is paying off.
“The first year to get to know the car, and then last year was great,” he said. “It wouldn’t have happened without Chris Allard; there’s no two ways about it. I owe a big deal to Chris.”
Now moving forward to this year, the track has made the decision to combine the Mini Stocks with the Mighty Minis, making for what looks to be a 30 car plus division next season.
“I was going up anyways, but I think now it will be like it was four years ago,” Wilman said. “It won’t be all car, but driver too as you’ll need to drive your way to the front. It’s not just going to be the fastest cars up front and go, as you’ll have to work your way through.”
In addition to returning, the team is proud to announce that Dee’s Rama Smoke Shack will be back as a sponsor for the third straight year. SKLD Motorsports is proud to have her support, through the highs and lows, and is appreciative of her support.
