Rick Woolner Memorial Set for Sauble Speedway in August

The Woolner Family and Rick Woolner Memorial staff announced on February 9 that the Rick Woolner Memorial will be ran at Sauble Speedway on Saturday, August 12. The announcement was made by Julia Woolner-Stewart, Woolner’s sister.

Last year, the staff made the decision to make the event non-sanctioned under any of the modified racing divisions in Ontario, and host the event at Sauble Speedway. Previously, the event spent four years ran under the OSCAAR banner – with three of those hosted at Full Throttle Motor Speedway. Notably, Gary McLean has won the event each year for the past four years.

As part of hosting the event, the race organizers will once again have a sponsorship program to help raise the purse for the participating drivers in the race, up and above what the track is set to pay-out for the race.

“It is our way of thanking them for participating and helping to keep the memory of RICK WOOLNER and his love for racing alive,” Julia posted. “It’s not just Rick it’s all of our racing friends and family that have passed on. We have been very fortunate over the years to have such outstanding sponsor support with this sponsorship program and we would like to express our deepest gratitude and thanks to our sponsors! It is without a doubt our sponsors that make it possible for this format, it is like no other! Every once in a while changes have to be made so that this program not only benefits the drivers but is also respectful to the raceway.

“The raceway supports our sponsorship program by allowing us to give our sponsors passes for the race day of the memorial. Let me tell you that is a LOT of Passes to be given and we are also grateful to the speedway for this.”

As stated, any LAP sponsors ($75.00) will receive 2 GRANDSTAND PASSES and any SPECIALTY SPONSORS ($150.00+) will receive 2 PIT PASSES.

In the days and months moving forward, plans are in place to continue to post updates on Sauble Speedway’s facebook page and the Rick Woolner Memorial facebook page. For those interested in being a sponsor of the event, they are encouraged to get a hold of Julia or Ken Berfez for details.

Woolner began his racing career in 1983 in street stocks, before moving up to the sportsman/late model classes, and eventually the open-wheel modifieds. He would race all across Ontario and the northeastern United States, scoring 55 feature wins and 170 heat wins. With his health declining, he stepped out from behind the wheel in 1999, before passing away on August 22, 1999 as a result of cancer.
