Phil Givens Scores Clean Sweep at Sunset Speedway

INNISFIL, Ontario — Through his career, Phil Givens has swept the heats on several occasions. However, on those nights, he was unable to win the feature. That changed on Saturday night, with Givens getting the clean sweep on the night.

Brandon Steele won the first heat ahead of Matt Boyes, John Bird, Austyn Jennett, Karlie Wilman, Cheyenne Reed-Charles, Jordan Owen, and Joe Dunlop.

Phil Givens scored the victory in the second qualified ahead of Aundrea Lusk, Andrew Shilling, Peter Inglis, Calvin Reesor, and Nicole Stewart.

The third heat started off messy with Bird spinning Reed-Charles at the front of the field, with Boyes clipping her in the process. Brandon Steele went for the daily double ahead of Jennett, Bird, Wilman, Owen, Reed-Charles, and Dunlop.

Phil Givens went for the daily double ahead of Shilling, Lusk, Inglis, Jacob Booth, Reesor, and Stewart.

Come feature time, Brandon Steele broke out to the early advantage ahead of Phil Givens, with John Bird getting alongside Aundrea Lusk for third on Lap 4, as Andrew Shilling and Austyn Jennett battled for fifth. The battle for third went wrong a lap later, with Bird turning Lusk around in turns one and two, collecting Jennett in the process. With 20 laps to go, Steele led Givens, Shilling, Matt Boyes, Karlie Wilman, Cheyenne Reed-Charles, Jacob Booth, Jordan Owen, Calvin Reesor, and Joe Dunlop.

The first attempt at a restart resulted in another yellow flag with Booth going around in turn four.

The second attempt would see more contact, with Lusk and Dunlop getting hooked together, ending Lusk’s night early. Dunlop was able to continue, as well as Nicole Stewart who spun to avoid contact. Unfortunately, Shilling came down pit road with mechanical issues under the yellow flag, done for the event.

Brandon Steele got a good restart to maintain the lead ahead of Givens, Boyes, Wilman, and Reed-Charles, as Bird and Owen ran side-by-side for sixth ahead of Jennett. Bird then got alongside Reed-Charles for fifth on Lap 8, with Jennett getting by Owen for seventh. Bird completed the pass, only to be challenged by Jennett in return. Jennett was unable to get by, falling in behind Bird. Unfortunately, Dunlop made his way down pit road done for the event on Lap 10.

Owen would then challenge Reed-Charles for seventh on Lap 11, with Jennett challenging Bird a lap later for fifth. Jennett got the spot on Lap 13, with Owen moving into seventh. Jennett continued moving forward, passing Wilman for fourth on Lap 15. Wilman now ran fifth ahead of Bird, Owen, Booth, Reed-Charles, Reesor, and Stewart. Unfortunately, Reesor pitted with issues on Lap 16.

Bird was able to catch up to Wilman and get alongside her for fifth on Lap 17, getting by for the spot a lap later. Wilman did not let him get away, keeping him close and challenging back for the spot. Unfortunately, contact would see Bird go around on the last lap of the event.

Brandon Steele led the feature flag-to-flag, and came across the finish line first. Unfortunately, he would be disqualified in post-race technical inspection.

Phil Givens was credited with the win ahead of Matt Boyes, Austyn Jennett, Karlie Wilman, and Jordan Owens. John Bird placed sixth ahead of Jacob Booth, Cheyenne Reed-Charles, Nicole Stewart, and Calvin Reesor. Joe Dunlop got 11th, followed by Andrew Shilling and Aundrea Lusk.
