INNISFIL, Ontario —- The opening night at Sunset Speedway brought forth a lot of positive vibes, with a couple first-time checkered flag holders at SKLD Motorsports.
Andrew Shilling started off the night by winning the opening heat, while Austyn Jennett scored a runner-up. The pair then switched things up in the second round of qualifying with a win for Jennett, and a mechanical black flag for Shilling.
With Shilling and Jennett starting third and sixth respectively for the feature, the pair began to make moves right away, with Jennett moving up to third in the opening laps. It would not last, though, as Jennett fell back to fourth with Shiling right behind in sixth at Lap 5.
Jennett was able to make his way back forward, passing Brandon Steele for third four laps later. Shilling, meanwhile, had dropped to seventh, and eventually headed down pit road with mechanical issues on Lap 14.
Jennett would cross the finish line in second following a last lap pass, but was disqualified in post-race technical inspection. There has been some recent changes made with regards to exhaust size and specifications, with SKLD Motorsports unaware prior to opening night. The team plans to fix this and be fully prepared and ready to go for the next night of competition.
After his mechanical gremlins and a pair of disqualifications, Shilling was credited with 11th.
SKLD Motorsports is proud to be sponsored by Dee’s Original Smoke Shack, Hamilton Contracting, Wilman Haulage, Unique Crew, Short Track Musings, and The Canoe. Jennett also receives additional sponsorship from Able Taxi.
