Rick Spencer-Walt Comes Up One Spot Short on Saturday Night at Sunset Speedway

INNISFIL, Ontario — Leading laps in the 50-lap feature, Rick Spencer-Walt ultimately came up one spot short when the checkered flag fell on Saturday night.

The No. 31 Late Model was fast right from the beginning of the night, with Spencer-Walt winning his first heat, followed by a runner-up in the second qualifier.

Starting first for the 50-lap feature, he would fade back to fourth in the opening five laps, but kept himself within striking distance of the leaders. He began to make progress back forward on Lap 17, taking the third spot back. He then moved into second on Lap 27, before taking the top spot six laps later on Lap 33.

It appeared as though Spencer-Walt was set to cruise to the checkered flag for the victory, when the caution came out with six laps to go for a spin off of turn four. Over the next three restarts, Spencer-Walt pushed hard to try and keep the lead, but ultimately crossed the finish line in second.

To date, with 14 features now in the books for the 2019 campaign, Spencer-Walt has scored four wins, six runner-ups, a pair of thirds, a fourth, and a seventh. As a result, he currently leads the track division standings.

He is also currently leading the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I Provincial Standings, and was 16th in the national standings (despite some United States competitors having ran twice the amount of features), just 16 points out of the top-10, as of the last update on August 4. Notably, he is the highest ranked Canadian in the standings.

Spencer-Walt will be back in action on Saturday, August 24 for the next night of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I competition at Sunset Speedway.

The Eldon Wallis owned team is proud to receive sponsorship this season from Simcoe Sewer and Water,, Jim Wilson Chevrolet, Auto Trim Design, Speedy Auto Glass Orillia, Byer’s Equipment Motorsports, Orser Technical Services, Heidi’s RV Superstore,, HOTC, and EPIC Racewear.
