Jody Bound Scores Outlaw Midget Victory at Sunset Speedway

There’s a reason why a bound-ty has been placed on Jody Bound, as he dominated en route to scoring the Outlaw Midget season opener victory at Sunset Speedway on Saturday night.

The night didn’t start off as Jessica James hoped, with problems in the first heat. There’d also be a quick caution mid-race, with Richard Woodland and Shawn Gardner getting together in turn two, with Wayne McKibbon catching a piece of the action. Then just after taking the checkered flag, contact happened between Gardner and Dave Bradley, with both Gardner and Nigel Buttivant going around. Jeff Blackburn picked up the win ahead of Brian Woodland, Gardner, Bradley, Richard Woodland, Buttivant, McKibbon and Steve Lassman.

The second heat didn’t start off as Rob McCall planned, as he ran into issues before the green flag. Right from the start, Lorne Van Dusen tried for the space between Zackary Millman and Ryan Brown, but it didn’t work, with contact and Van Dusen going around for a quick spin in turn three. The problems continued for Van Dusen, with another spin later on in turn two. Jody Bound picked up the victory ahead of Robin McLean, Paul Draganac, Larry Lawson, Brown, Wally Wilson, Millman, and Monty Farrell.

The third heat started off with problems for Gardner, as he headed down pit road prior to the green flag. Jeff Blackburn went for the daily double ahead of Richard Woodland, Brian Woodland, Lassman, Buttivant, and McKibbon.

The fourth heat didn’t go smoothly, with McCall spinning in turn four while Draganac received the mechanical black flag. Jody Bound went for the daily double ahead of Brown, Lawson, Van Dusen, McCall, Farrell, Wilson, Millman, and McLean.

Come feature time, it’d be Robin McLean jumping out to the early lead with Jeff Blackburn and Paul Draganac side-by-side for second. Blackburn would grab second on Lap 2 ahead of Draganac, as Jody Bound moved into the fourth spot.

Blackburn continued to move forward, getting alongside McLean for the lead on Lap 3, before passing him a lap later. His reign out front didn’t last long, though, with Jody Bound passing them both to take the lead on Lap 5.

With five laps in the books, Bound led ahead of Blackburn, McLean, Draganac, Larry Lawson and Richard Woodland. Woodland would get alongside Lawson for fifth at Lap 6, completing the pass a lap later. Behind them, Brian Woodland ran seventh ahead of Shawn Gardner. Gardner was able to get by Woodland, taking over the seventh spot on Lap 8, with Lorne Van Dusen trying to follow him through but unable to.

Further up the field, Richard Woodland continued to move forward as he passed Draganac for fourth at Lap 10, with Lawson continued to run sixth ahead of Gardner, Brian Woodland and Van Dusen. Van Dusen then fell back a spot on Lap 12 as he was passed by Ryan Brown. Brown continued to move forward, passing Brian Woodland for eighth at Lap 13.

With the leaders caught up in lap traffic, it made for tight competition with attempts for passes throughout as they weaved their way left and right. Some of the passes worked, while others weren’t as successful. Though at the front, there was no catching Jody Bound as he cruised to victory.

Jody Bound got the victory ahead of Jeff Blackburn, Richard Woodland, Robin McLean and Shawn Gardner. Paul Draganac finished sixth, followed by Larry Lawson, Ryan Brown, Brian Woodland, and Rob McCall. Steve Lassman finished 11th, followed by Lorne Van Dusen, Wayne McKibbon, Wally Wilson, Monty Farrell, Dave Bradley, Jessica James, and Nigel Buttivant.
